Schticks and Stones: Bill Maher and Ann Coulter Drag Politics into the Gutter … Again

The following is a guest post by Red Alerts fan, my wife Jenn:

What’s scarier, the tasteless comedy stylings of a right wing pundit like Ann Coulter, or the self-important punditry of a comedian masquerading as a far left icon (Bill Maher, of course)? There’s no doubt in my mind that the latter is a far greater threat to America and Americans.

Ann Coulter, self-appointed master epithet slinger, may or may not actually be a homophobe and bigot. What we know with certainty is that she is a parasitic attention junkie who feeds off of getting a good rise out of people. Like many comedians, Ann craves attention for being offensive and outrageous. It sells books.

But Bill Maher is a much scarier beast - he doesn’t just want attention, he wants followers. Ann Coulter’s got a misguided schtick, while Bill Maher takes the stage with a misguided mission - to gather support for the notion that if Dick Cheney had perished in the recent attempt on his life, “other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.” While Ann Coulter vomits her opinion indiscriminately and doesn’t really care if you agree, Bill Maher, like all conspiracy theorists, presents his nonsense as fact.

As Ace of Spades points out, “The right actually takes Coulter to task for her increasingly irresponsible jokes.” Meanwhile, the left (and not just the Al Frankens, Janeane Garofalos, and Amanda Marcottes of the world) ceaselessly defends Maher’s ever so sharp political observations, and are undoubtedly already working on interviewing him for the next A.N.S.W.E.R. newsletter.

If we ignore Ann Coulter’s nonsense, her voice will grow meeker and will eventually fade away. But Bill Maher doesn’t need our support - he’s already got plenty of deranged nutroots on his side.
