Why Are Eco-Terrorists Becoming More Active?

There have been three high profile terrorist attacks by radical environmentalist in the past week. First there was the home invasion of a UCSC researchers house where her family, including her 10 year old daughter who was having a birthday party at the time, came under attack. The researchers husband was injured trying to protect his family from the group of six who ran like yellow dogs after they assaulted the man with an unknown object. The F.B.I. is involved and the incident is being classified domestic terrorism.

Santa Cruz, where the incident took place, has a history of radical activity including an attempt last year to blow up a police car parked in front of a Police woman’s house. Had she not noticed it, or had it detonated early, she would likely have died.

Then several Japanese sailor on board a Whaling ship were injured by anti-Whaling activists who hurled toxic substances onto their ship, prompting a diplomatic row between Japan and Australia and The Netherlands. Japan blames the two countries for enabling the Sea Shepard’s, who apparently have a their own fleet of ships. The eco-terrorists are defending the attack, saying that if the rancid substance sickened a few Japanese it was no big deal.

And earlier today a multi million dollar development was burned to the ground by E.L.F., who may have used I.E.D. like explosive devices to start the blaze.

So what’s driving this green Tet offensive anyway? The answer is likely that these radicals have learned that terrorism works from the wests lackluster response to Islamic Imperialism.

Just sample the recent news to see how cravenly we in the west are cowed by the threat of terrorism:

YouTube has bowed to the demands of Pakistani Cyber Terrorists.

Dutch Lawmakers are looking into making Geert Wilder’s upcoming anti-Islam film illegal.

Harvard is implementing gender apartheid at the behest of Muslims.

What all these stories have in common is that they show people in power, politicians and captains of industry and even the ivy tower elite, giving in to outrageous demands by Muslims for fear of violence. Dutch lawmakers are scarred of the Muslims in their midst rising up and they should be, after all French “youths” just ambushed cops in France.

YouTube is scarred that Muslims will shut them down. Harvard is scarred of the Muslims. Terrorism works.

And since it does it should not surprise us to see that radicals of all stripes will begin to use terror tactics to get what they want. It’d be stupid not to because it is the surest route to political power. How can we tell a young idealist to work for 20, 30 or 40 years to see results when a 5 year campaign of bombings and arson can achieve the same goals?

How do we tell a kid who thinks the wet lands are being destroyed by “McMansions” to wait and see if we can mitigate the damage, to debate whether there will be damage at all and to act civilized while the world rewards Islamist savagery?

How do we tell people not to be terrorist when terrorism works?

There are consequences to appeasement beyond emboldening those who are appeased. This chaos among our homegrown radicals is one of them.

Lebanese Shia Cleric Claims USS Cole Off Coast “An Act of War”

A senior Shia cleric (code word for Hezbollah mouthpiece) went on a saber rattling rant in this revolting propaganda piece from PressTV:

A senior Lebanese Shia cleric has said that the new US move to deploy a US warship off the Lebanese coast amounts to a declaration of war.

Seyyed Mohammed Hossein Fadlallah said, “The deployment of the USS Cole to the area is no less than a declaration of war and a new attempt to break the resistance and anti-American groups in the region.”

“Positions taken by some Lebanese elements in support of the US military moves along the Lebanese coast are deeply reprehensible,” he noted.

Commenting on recent Israeli atrocities in the Gaza Strip, the cleric said, “We are now observing that not only have Arabs ignored the Palestinian issue in general, but have remained deplorably indifferent to the massacre of innocent Palestinians by the Zionist regime that has been going on without interruption for more than half a century.”

Israeli atrocities. Like I said propaganda.

But it is an interesting coincidence that the Iranian backed Hezbollah would want to pick a fight with the U.S. just when Iranian ally Venezuela is poised to invade one of our allies. It’d be a boon to Venezuelan military action to have the U.S. completely tied up fighting not just in Iraq but in a new front in Lebanon while Chevez, F.A.R.C. and Ecuador carve up Columbia.

A.T.F. Up to Their Old Tricks?

The conspiracy theory boom on the right in the 90s was a direct result of Janet Reno’s A.T.F. transforming itself from a taxation and regulation agency to the jack booted stormtroopers of libertarian myth. Cretin like Alex Jones came to prominences in an environment where the A.T.F. kicked in doors seemingly at random in all to often fruitless searches for law breakers. When not gladly setting cults of hippies alight on national TV they were explaining away gunning down of a family of conspiracy mongering Klanners to congress.

Reno’s Justice department and more specifically the heavy handed A.T.F. unleashed upon the public made fertile the soil from which the various conspiracy movements have grown and from which the right has only somewhat successfully distanced itself since the end of the Clinton years. That is why many of us may have overlooked the continuing pattern of abuse of American citizens by the A.T.F. that goes on to this very day.

Red’s Trading Post is a gunshop who is struggling to defend itself from the depredations of an out of control agency. The blog run by Red’s proprietor Ryan Horsely has become required reading for anyone researching the abuse of Americans by A.T.F. zealots, and it is from here that I found this outrageous story:

The BATFE raided firearms manufacturer Cavalry Arms for suspicion of fraud and money laundering, they also “took hundreds of guns from the scene, including AK-47s, assault weapons and high powered rifles.” Here are my 2 big questions:

1. When did the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives begin to start regulating fraud and money laundering?

2. Even if they did why would they need to seize their firearms?

One firearms manufacturer told me of a similar situation where the ATF seized firearms and computers for 15 months, finally when it was all said and done they sent them a nice little letter stating that they didn’t find anything and apologized for the inconvenience.

Yet another over reach by the A.T.F. who are now investigating crimes that have little, if anything, to do with their supposed area of expertise. The disturbing answer to Ryan’s question may well be that the paramilitarized A.T.F. is getting called out to serve high risk warrants because of all their “combat experience” during Reno’s tenure. That and they’ve proved themselves to be quite willing to trample Americans constitutional rights.

It gets worse however as David Codrea of The War on Guns exposes a complicit local media who are distracting the public from the oddly fascistic undertones of the A.T.F.’s partner ship with a glorified collection agency by skewering the satirical ad campaigns Calvary Arms produced in accordance with their First Amendment rights:

Me, I’m interested in learning more about this “public/private partnership,” the contractor partner in the raid, Forfeiture Support Associates. They, their relationship with the government and the people behind them deserve much closer scrutiny and should not be operating under the radar, as they will if we rely on “Authorized Journalists” to provide any kind of oversight.

They’re too busy being shocked, shocked at a Cavalry Arms Internet spoof and consulting the Council on American Islamic relations about a perceived attack on “Muslim Men…for the purpose of selling a semiautomatic rifle!”

Read the whole post which is replete with links giving a troublesome context to this assault combined assault by the media and A.T.F. on the First and Second amendment rights of Cavarly Arms.

Nikki at The Liberty Zone says word on the Web is that a disgruntled former employee set the ball rolling on this.

I’d say that their ad campaigns by featuring Oleg Volk photos and hardcore Libertarian philosophies provoked the A.T.F. and as much as the vindictive report of a neer-do-well. Here’s an example:

oleg-volk-woman-with-gun.jpg

Cavarly Arms is a symbolic target, and a successful prosecution of them will not just shut down an American business, but will have a chilling effect on politically incorrect speech. We all know that ultimately the government cannot protect you and that the police aren’t your bodyguards and shouldn’t be expected to act as such. The A.T.F. and the powers that be don’t want you to say that however, the question is why?

War in the Americas: Venezuela, Ecuador Mass Troops on Columbian Border

In response to Columbia killing a senior member of Marxist Narco-terrorist group F.A.R.C. in a commando raid Huge Chavez has massed armor and thousands of troops on the Columbian border. Ecuador has followed suit, massing troops on the opposite border threatening the long time U.S. ally with war on two fronts.

F.A.R.C., who murdered three American Indian rights activists in 1999, have long been suspected of having strong ties with the Venezuelan communist leader who supports them and gives F.A.R.C. shelter in his country. F.A.R.C. itself is believed to have between 9000-and 12,000 armed combatants and to earn between 250-300 million dollars a year through drug sales, extortion and kidnapping. It is also believed they use slave labor to cultivate the Coca and Poppy on their plantations:

The FARC finances its operations through kidnapping and ransom, extortion, and narcotics trafficking. It also targets anyone suspected of conspiring with the military and paramilitaries.

According to military analysts, the FARC earns between $250 and $300 million through criminal acts, of which 65 percent comes from the drug trade.

The FARC’s conventional “guerrilla” weapons include explosives, landmines and bombs camouflaged as necklaces, soccer balls, and soup cans.

They have also orchestrated prison revolts, attacked against police and military personnel and regularly set up roadblocks to “protect” villages from military or paramilitary infiltration. According to reports, the FARC forcibly enlists any persons between the ages of 13 and 60 to work coca or poppy plantations, and serve in the military. The FARC have also targeted religious leaders and banned any spiritual expression.

Ecuador was thought to be acting in support of their fellow communist nation until it was reported that Columbian commandos captured documents implicating Ecuador’s Rafael Correa in deals with the terror group:

A spokesman for Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said that during the raid, troops had found documents that provided information that “[Ecuadorean President Correa] has a relationship and commitments with Farc”,

Police commander Gen Oscar Naranjo said one document showed Reyes had met Ecuador’s minister of internal security and that they discussed Mr Correa’s “interest in making official relations with the Farc”.

The Reyes mentioned was F.A.R.C. spokesman and senior leader Raul Reyes, who was one of several terrorists killed in the attack.

Columbia now faces three armies, one on each side of them and one within their own land. Democrats have snubbed Columbia in recent years, making it clear that they favor the Marxist regimes over America’s freedom loving allies, and perhaps those actions have led Venezuela, Ecuador and F.A.R.C. to believe it Columbia is ripe for the picking.

Chavez has called Columbia the “Israel of South America” perhaps as a code to activate the Hezbollah cells he allows to operate in his country. Once active in the middle of a Marxist led war the Islamists will spread chaos and death well beyond the battle zone.

Columbia will likely get little if any assistance from America as the communists roll their tanks and troops across hard pressed nations borders. Once that war kicks off in earnest a destabilized Latin America and a porous souther U.S. border will likely spell disaster for the entire hemisphere.

Las Vegas Ricin Victim Identified as Roger von Bergendorff

He might be a victim of his own stupidity however as police are still unable to determine why Ricin was in his room. Michelle Malkin caught this one from the Las Vegas Review Journal:

The Las Vegas hotel suite where vials of ricin were found Thursday also contained guns and literature about anarchy with information on the deadly toxin, police said Friday.

Nevertheless, Las Vegas police continued to downplay the significance of the ricin discovery, saying they had ruled out terrorism as a motive.

“I want to assure everybody that the Las Vegas Valley is safe,” Las Vegas police Capt. Joseph Lombardo said. “We don’t currently have any terrorist threat at this time or possibility of contamination (due) to ricin.”

The Metropolitan Police Department reported one person has been injured by the biological agent. That man has been in critical condition at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center for more than two weeks.

Police said the man is 57 years old and was staying in the suite at the Extended Stay America on Valley View Boulevard near Flamingo Road where the ricin was found.

Police have not identified the man, but a Homeland Security internal document obtained by the Review-Journal states that he is Roger Von Bergendorff.

The man placed an emergency call from the suite on Feb. 14, saying he was in respiratory distress and asking to be transported to a hospital, police said.

“He’s unable to speak with us right now,” said Deputy Chief Kathy Suey, who leads the Police Department’s Homeland Security Division.

His medical condition, however, was consistent with exposure to the poisonous substance, authorities said.

If a person exposed to ricin doesn’t die within three to five days, the victim usually recovers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Seven other people, including three police officers and three employees at the long-term stay hotel, also were hospitalized as a precaution. No one other than Von Bergendorff had exhibited signs of ricin exposure.

Before Thursday’s discovery of the deadly poison, hotel management and Las Vegas police had visited the suite twice without detecting it.

On Feb. 22, eight days after Von Bergendorff was hospitalized, one of the man’s “relations” called hotel management to alert them to two cats and one dog that were in the suite, Lombardo said.

Management contacted the Humane Society to take care of the animals, and the cats were taken in and are in good health. A veterinarian with the society determined the dog was in ill health because of lack of food and water and the animal was destroyed, Lombardo said.

Not to sound like Marion Cottilard but that doesn’t wash. Unless the dog was in poor health already I would think it could be saved the same way you’d save a person who was dehydrated and starving. Plus the cats were in the same predicament as the dog but are in good health. This just doesn’t sound right to me.

Sounds to my admittedly suspicious mind like Von Bergendorff was using the animals to test his homemade Ricin and the police think that kind of information will undermine their attempt to frame the 57 year old anarchist anything but a terrorist.

The lone wacko theory seems less and less likely however:

On Tuesday, management at the hotel began eviction procedures and called Las Vegas police after discovering four firearms in the suite, the Homeland Security memo states.

Police then found an anarchist textbook that was “tabbed” to a section on ricin, Lombardo said.

That discovery prompted police investigators to test the room for the deadly substance. The test was negative.

On Thursday, a man who “claimed to be a relative” was in the suite and discovered several vials of ricin in a bag, along with castor beans from which the substance is derived, Suey said.

Police have not identified the man, whom they said was 53 years old. But the Homeland Security document identified him as Thomas Tholen.

Authorities said Tholen took the vials of ricin to the manager’s office. It was not clear whether Tholen knew what the vials contained.

Steve Huff sniffs disapprovingly at right wing blog coverage of the case but does put forward some useful information about Bergendorff and his “relative” Thomas Tholen:

Relatives or not, Bergendorff and Thomas Tholen have both been listed in public records at the same Riverton street address, a 3-bedroom, 1-story home in the 3000 block of West 13400 Street. Salt Lake County property records show that address is owned by Tholen.

There is no evidence at the moment that the man in the Vegas hospital is the same Roger Bergendorff who created sci-fi-oriented visual art in the 80s, but it is interesting to note that some of the Salt Lake City-related info found related to a Thomas Tholen online indicate that Tholen may be a fine arts teacher at a Salt Lake area high school.

Again Huff is of the opinion that two weirdos, Ricin and a dead dog found with healthy cats adds up to nothing more sinister than an eccentric on the loose. Perhaps if the men were Muslims he’d feel differently, but I’d remind him that Tim McVeigh wasn’t a Muslim and though there are conflicting reports as to his motives, we can all agree it was terrorism.

In our politically polarized society would it be beyond the pale to suggest terrorism seems a likely motive for manufacturing Ricin?

But even if it wasn’t technically political terrorism wouldn’t the situation still be news worthy? If Bergendorff was not an anti-government anarchist but a crazed Manson follower looking to poison someone for Charlie would Malkin, myself and everyone else Huff dismissively assigns to the “right wing” of the blogoshpere (as if it’s a niche like food blogger) be less interested?

I suppose to Huff we are unfeeling cretin with whom he must occasionally sully himself by linking to but must distance himself lest “good” people think he harbor some hidden love of liberty, low taxes or Ronald Reagan in his heart? That would explain why he seems to think only the siren call of possible terrorism would attract we vultures of the right to this horrible story.

It doesn’t have to come from Al-Qaeda to be terrorism, and it doesn’t have to be terrorism to make people on the right take notice. Ultimately the kind of contempt Steve Huff shows for the right (which is the reason I linked to him) is a microcosmic view of Americas poisonous partisan atmosphere and will likely explain what Roger von Bergendorff was doing with Ricin in his room.
