Mark Steyn: Who Does Obama Think We’re at War With?

A good question but I would put forward that it is America, not just Obama, that doesn’t understand the full scope of the war we face. Obama’s noncommittal toe in the water approach to warfare is a symptom of the Fortress America fantasy that sees America as so powerful that we can actually give away much of our power and still be safe from the world. It is not just the left but many on the fringe right think that Islamism, Communism, eco-terror and a host of other threats to us cannot effectively destroy America so they simply aren’t worth confronting. Worse they adopt a pose of indifference to these enemies in the vain hope that sans “provocations” from us (like buying oil and exporting those gauche ideas of liberty for all and free market economics) everyone would simply love us too much to ever want to harm us.

Such Lotus-Eater like insouciance concerning America and her place in the world is not a product of Barack Obama so much as President Obama and his election is the culmination of the ascendancy of this school of thought. It will be at least three years until we have leadership that takes our defense seriously and in the mean time we will suffer a withering barage of attacks from enemies that cannot even be named:

On the other hand, if we are now at war, as Obama belatedly concedes, against whom are we warring? “We are at war against al-Qaida,” says the president.

Really? But what does that mean? Was the previous month’s “isolated extremist,” the Fort Hood killer, part of al-Qaida? When it came to spiritual advice, he turned to the same Yemeni-based American-born imam as the Pantybomber, but he didn’t have a fully paid-up membership card.

[…]

What did the Pantybomber have a membership card in? Well, he was president of the Islamic Society of University College, London. Kafeel Ahmed, who died after driving a burning jeep into the concourse of Glasgow Airport, had been president of the Islamic Society of Queen’s University, Belfast. Yassin Nassari, serving three years in jail for terrorism, was president of the Islamic Society of the University of Westminster. Waheed Arafat Khan, arrested in the 2006 Heathrow terror plots that led to Americans having to put their liquids and gels in those little plastic bags, was president of the Islamic Society of London Metropolitan University.

Doesn’t this sound like a bigger problem than “al-Qaida,” whatever that is? The president has now put citizens of Nigeria on the secondary-screening list. Which is tough on Nigerian Christians, who have no desire to blow up your flight to Detroit. Aside from the highly localized Tamil terrorism of India and Sri Lanka, suicide bombing is a phenomenon entirely of Islam. The broader psychosis that manifested itself only the other day in an axe murderer breaking into a Danish cartoonist’s home to kill him because he objects to his cartoon is, likewise, a phenomenon of Islam. This is not to say (to go wearily through the motions) that all Muslims are potential suicide bombers and axe murderers, but it is to state the obvious – that this “war” is about the intersection of Islam and the West, and its warriors are recruited in the large pool of young Muslim manpower, not in Yemen and Afghanistan so much as in Copenhagen and London.

But the president of the United States cannot say that because he is overinvested in a fantasy – that, if only that Texan moron Bush had read Khalid Sheikh Mohammed his Miranda rights and bowed as low as Obama did to the Saudi king, we wouldn’t have all these problems. So now Obama says, “We are at war.” But he cannot articulate any war aims or strategy because they would conflict with his illusions. And so we will stagger on, playing defense, pulling more and more items out of our luggage – tweezers, shoes, shampoo, snow globes, suppositories – and reacting to every new provocation with greater impositions upon the citizenry.

We’re so strong we can afford to be weak many say. It is the exercise of our strength that causes problems. This is the progressive version of the meek will inherit the earth which while a nice theological point to debate is a foolhardy defense policy. Unfortunately America will have to learn that the hard way.

UC Irvine Receives Fifth “Black Death” Envelope

This is a story I haven’t seen make much of a media splash even though it seems like it would. Apparently someone has been mailing black envelopes to UC Irvine faculty and staff which contain an as yet unidentified white powder and the words “Black Death” as part of a message. From NBC Los Angeles:

A fifth envelope containing a white powder and a message with the words “black death” was discovered at UC Irvine, according to KCAL9. The envelope had the same return address as four others discovered previously.

Earlier in the day, a fourth envelope was discovered addressed to an assistant Dean of Biological Sciences and sent to the Natural Sciences II building. Authorities closed the office while tests were conducted for hazardous materials, according to University Spokesman Tom Vasich.

Field tests done by the FBI Tuesday showed the powder from 3 previous envelopes was not a biological hazard, such as anthrax.

Of course no one has released exactly what the powder is as of yet. LAist notes that all were addressed to women and the L.A. Times has a blow by blow of how this story unfolded. There is speculation that the letters were all mailed over Christmas break and distributed on Monday. All the letters have Idaho postmarks.

Molotov Cocktail Found Near Philadelphia I.C.E. Office

From Philly.com:

A molotov cocktail was discovered this afternoon in a garage near a Center City office of the Department of Homeland Security and triggered an investigation by city police and federal authorities.

A bottle filled with diesel fuel was found just before 2 p.m. in the garage on the corner of Callowhill and North 16th Street. The garage is across the street from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices.

Initial reports said a laptop computer and several anti-Israel books were found with the device, which had been placed near a generator.

A tipster called police after seeing a man with several full trash bags emerge from a garage storage closet. A bomb squad unit “rendered safe” the molotov cocktail, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Police were trying to identify the man seen with the bags and determine if he was linked to the explosive device.

Sounds scary.

Self-Described Jihadist Caught Making Bomb Threats in Memphis Out on $100 Bond

Yes I said $100.

MEMPHIS, TN – Tonight, Mohamed Ibrahim is out after posting $100 bond. Earlier in the day, he was arrested after police say he walked into several Memphis businesses and threatened to blow them up.

Court records show Ibrahim was also telling people he was Muslim, and wanted to start a jihad, or holy war, in Memphis.

Police say when they arrested him, he had a butcher knife hidden in one of his jacket sleeve

Notice that MyEyeWitness News is reporting that Mohamed Ibrahim was “telling people he was Muslims” as if there is some question about whether or not this is true. I point this out to give some insight into the political culture of Memphis.

Ryan Poe at The Commercial Appeal gives you a sense of how dangerous Ibrahim is:

A Memphis man was arrested Friday after he walked into seven local businesses and announced that he would bomb them if they didn’t close, according to a police affidavit.

The report states that Mohamed Ibrahim, 35, threatened businesses on Poplar Avenue, Summer Avenue, Mendenhall, Perkins and Danny Thomas Boulevard.

“If you don’t close this place up, I’m going to blow it to pieces,” Ibrahim told customers at the BP Gas Station on the 300 block of Poplar, according to the report.

A police officer pulled over the suspect’s black PT Cruiser on Poplar and arrested Ibrahim, who was “very nervous” and appeared as if “he was trying to hide something,” the report stated.

The suspect tried to kick out the windows of a patrol car during the arrest and police said they had to use pepper spray to subdue him.

Ibrahim was found in possession of “Islamic cassettes” which I assume weren’t audio of Sufi poetry and was charged with commission of a terrorist act as well as filing a false report and disorderly conduct. Given those facts bail seems pretty low.

Top I.C.E. Official Guilty of Helping Mexican Drug Dealers

From Corruption Chronicles:

In yet another blow to a scandal-plagued U.S. Department of Homeland Security agency, one of the highest ranking officials in the history of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has admitted that he collaborated with Mexican drug dealers.

Richard Cramer, who once headed the busy Nogales Arizona ICE headquarters and was twice an attaché to Mexico, pleaded guilty in a south Florida federal court to obstructing justice by helping a pair of Mexican drug traffickers avoid arrest. The veteran federal agent assisted the drug smugglers and money launderers by obtaining confidential information from U.S. law enforcement databases, including the National Criminal Information Center and the criminal information systems of the Drug Enforcement Administration as well as ICE.

At the time, Cramer was in charge of ICE operations in Guadalajara, Mexico. He helped arrange the safe return to Mexico of a money launderer and drug dealer hiding in Miami Florida. The men’s criminal associates in Mexico had Cramer run their names in U.S. law enforcement databases to determine whether there were any arrest warrants or investigations pending. Cramer provided printouts of the confidential criminal checks, assuring that no warrants or probes would interfere with the return to Mexico.

Federal officials were shocked that the high-ranking ICE official, known as a dedicated leader in the war on drugs, assisted the enemy in this fashion. In Arizona he was known as an incorruptible and tireless cop who could never be cracked by the bad guys. Now he faces two decades in jail and has the dubious honor of being the highest ranking ICE official to admit or be convicted of corruption.

They go on to point out that this isn’t the first high level I.C.E. official to be pinched. The sort of corruption that defines Mexico has gained a foothold in America.
