Lynn Thompson: Fighting With Bowie Knives

Cold Steel’s Lynn Thompson is unfairly criticized for being an armchair warrior (by other armchair warriors for the most part) though he does all a responsible person can do to demonstrate the quality of his products. He hunts and camps with Cold Steel products to show you how well they work, and takes the time to actually find people to train him in using these tools efficiently.

Here he discusses the basics fighting with the bowie knife. Woods loafers and survivalists in rural areas often can find a use for a big knife and Cold Steel’s Bowies are a backpacker’s delight so this video seems a natural fit for my woods running readers or anyone who decides to carry a bowie because of it is a light brutally effective weapon that can double as a camp ax and field knife in a pinch.

He’s demonstrating the Laredo and Natchez Bowies in the video. The Laredo can be had for under $200 which is a good deal on this sort of knife, the Natchez? Almost $500 on sale at Amazon which is too rich for my blood, but some people swear by them. There are good quality Bowie knives to be had for much cheaper, like this Winchester Bowie, but most will have stainless steel blades that will not stand up long term to vigorous use. You get what you pay for.

It’s about 25 minutes so settle in.

Dave Canterbury’s Introduction to Wilderness Trapping

This series of videos is a couple of years old, from before Dave Canterbury was a television star when he was still posting videos to his Pathfinder School YouTube channel. As I’ve said before, if you are harvesting meat in the wild hunting will not work for most people, running a small trapline is the best way to go. The Trapper’s Bible by Dale Martin is the best reference book out there for survival trapping.

These videos however, will walk you through the basics of survival trapping so you know what to expect. There doesn’t seem to be a part four but each section stands alone, so no worries. Continue reading

The Right and Wrong Way to Shoot Someone

This video from Outdoor Channel’s Best Defense program illustrates the wrong headed thinking of many survivalists who think that they will start blasting and then when the cops come lecture them on 2nd Amendment Rights, why Ron Paul should be president and all the other things people yelp on Internet forums that have no place in the after math of a deadly self-defense situation.

Please watch this if you’re carrying for self-defense and have gotten most of your advice for dealing with police from Libertarians:

Survival Medicine Download

For my money the best book on survival medicine written for those with little or no medical training is Where There Is No Doctor which I suggest everyone add to their bookshelves. But while I was playing around on my new Scribd account (I have an older one too that I forgot about) I found this e-book which covers everything from where to get medical training producing your own anesthetics to delivering a baby. A good reference to download and print out:
