I’m not sure if the immigrants are Muslim, but that would track with the behavior of Muslim immigrants of African descent in France where police are routinely injured by crowds while trying to keep the peace. The arrestees are from Somalia, and as the report says, “from other African countries” which makes me think Islam is the uniting factor unless this area creates an immigrant solidarity that America has not seen in European and Latin/Central American immigrants.

But the real story is that whatever the cause, the police in Portland have been put on notice that they do not run the streets:
PORTLAND — Several juveniles and adults face charges following a melee at Franklin Arterial and Fox Street that began when police stopped and arrested a shoplifting suspect and an unruly crowd gathered.
Police responded to a report that a man had stolen two bottles of vodka at 7 p.m. Friday at the Hannaford on Forest Avenue.
Workers at the store provided a description of the suspect and the car he left in, and police pulled the car over at Franklin Arterial and Fox Street a couple of minutes later, police said.
As police were arresting Jimmy Odong, 19, of Portland and recovering the stolen merchandise, a group of about 15 to 30 people gathered, with about 10 of them becoming aggressive toward police, officers said.
A number of other officers were dispatched to the area, which is alongside the Kennedy Park housing development. Members of the gathering group, some of whom are Sudanese, like Odong, and some who are from other African countries, began calling the officers names, including “killers” and “murderers,” in apparent reference to the police shooting of a Sudanese immigrant, David Okot, last month.
When police prepared to tow the car Odong had driven, some of the crowd jumped on the car to try to prevent it from being taken, police said.
Three juveniles eventually were arrested, two of them on charges of assault after they allegedly punched the officers, police said.
Police also charged Yannick Mulongo, 21, of Clark Street with unlawful interference with a law enforcement dog, after he allegedly taunted a police dog named Taz; and Sara Langoia, 18, of Anderson Street with obstructing government administration.
Police said they had to use pepper spray in making the arrests.
Since the original crook was stealing vodka I am leery to claim he was a Muslim, although many Muslims do in fact break that rule and drink. It could simply be the effects of coming from a war torn area with no real authority. Police capitulation will only make things worse in that respect. Surprise, they did:
The shift commander reported that additional arrests were warranted, but officers opted not to arrest others so the confrontation would not escalate.
Allowing some people to leave unmolested after assaulting cops will escalate things in the future. This story is bad news for America, and any hope you had that we wouldn’t be returning to 1970s levels of criminality along with 1970s style politics. Where’s Charles Bronson when you need him?

There has been increased hostility towards the police by generally the black immigrant population (mostly Sudanese and Somali) due to recent events, as the story noted. A couple weeks ago two police officers shot and killed a Sudanese man standing on a front stoop, then dragged his body down onto the sidewalk. There was no reason to move the body – they could have just stepped over him. Before that there have been a couple murders of immigrants that have not been solved.
I don’t condone the actions in the article, but your article suggest Islam is what united this group of people. I think bigger forces are poverty, language barriers and alcohol. Many of the immigrants are refugees from war torn countries now struggling to survive in America, and in this economy they are some of the hardest hit. In fact a lot of the immigrants are christian.

To blame poverty for crime is classist nonsense which presupposes poor people are more given to criminality than anyone else, which isn’t true. To claim alcohol caused a riot is to remove personal responsibility from the rioters. There is no struggle to survive here, or they would have fled to other countries with more generous welfare plans.
The other riot you speak of was caused by a culture of nihilism that has been encouraged in young people. Just as the 60s generation rebelled against police violently which gave rise to the massive crime waves of the 70s, Portland’s police department’s inability to maintain control is the product of 8+ years of a repackaged 60s mentality that will lead to an increase in crime in general.
I don’t know if the Somali rioters are Christians (and neither do you) but it would be foolish to ignore the parallels to this case and French Muslim attacks on police, if only because they have literally led to France ceding over 700 areas to lawlessness. Christians, particularly practicing Christians from societies that take piousness more seriously, simply don’t riot anymore than faithful Buddhists run hunting lodges, unless there is a total break down of the rule of law. Which I believe I supposed in the article.
Once someone is shot why does it matter if the body has been moved? It will be moved by the coroner anyway. Should they leave a dead body on a doorstep?

I have read the Quran. As well s the academic literature, since I have a degree in Comparative Religion and a Masters. Granted my Masters is in Liberal Arts but I think it’s more than enough education to comment on the similarities between this case and the Muslim interaction with police in Europe.

Nice try dude, but the names of the arrestees sound Sudanese, not Somali and the article clearly indicates that it is mostly the Sudanese community that has been angry at the police. As you should know, the Sudanese in Maine are mostly Christian refugee from the civil war in the south.
Sudan is a Muslim country. The Muslims in France are from Muslim African countries. That they are Christian refugees is debatable, Black Muslims are enslaved and persecuted by the Arabized Sudanese government as much as the Christians and Animists are.
The behavior mirrors the behavior of of the Muslims in the “No -go” zones in France. Pointing out that unassimilated immigrants from war torn countries need to be made to understand the rule of law (as I said in my last paragraph) is of paramount importance to law and order.
Lots of people are upset with police, not many attack them. I put forward one theory to explain it, but your theory is that instead the average Black guy will riot when upset. This is racist and I call bullshit.

I grew up in kennedy Park in the 70s and 80s I am now a minority to these ungrateful refugees!!!!! I think if they commit a violent crime they should be deported!!! I got on the metro and held my son tightly do you think one of those immagrants would let me sit? NOPE!!!!
and yes we are all created equal but then we choose to be good or bad!!!! I have a neice (best friends daughter) who has a convertable she went to kp and 2 somalian boys took her car and refuse to get out!!! And we say they are poor they drive nice cars and wear gold when they are 2yrs old so if thats poor i dont want to be rich!!! My daughter wouldnt take the school bus so she took the metro because a somalian girl threatened to cut her blonde hair and face with a box cutter they were 12 yrs old!!!
ok so maybe the sudanis and the somalians and the americans can be bad or good I just dont see americans going to other countries causing hate and discontent and getting free stuff and a house!!!! My son wont even go to the boys and girls club of AMERICA on chestnut street because of some of the somalians intimidate him!!! I am sure there are refugees who truly are kind and appriciate what America has done for them and are frustrated at the others for their behavior!!!!! Could you do the tiniest bit of factchecking before you post? Not all Africans in Maine are Somali, and Sudanese in Maine are Catholics from South Sudan. I realize you are probably scouring the internet for anything you could remotely tie to “omg muslim extreeemists coming 4 us”, but you’re totally off base here.
The Somalis are Muslims though, no? And this story is about anti-assimilation but I guess it would require you actually reading what was here to know that.
