Muslims Are Allowed to Eat Mermaids Under Most Islamic Jurisprudence

Yes, Muslims are allowed to participate in quasi-cannibalism under their understanding of their clearly evil god’s code of behavior. Let’s pretend for a moment Mermaids exist. These would be half-human half fish women who, while dangerous and cannibalistic in their own right, would be sentient beings capable of communicating with humans. And the Muslim answer to such a wondrous experience is to eat those women.

You don’t need to be Freud to figure this one out. From Islam QA via Jihad Watch:

A mermaid is a creature that lives in water and looks like a human. As to whether it really exists or it is a mythical being, that is subject to further discussion.

It says in a footnote in al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (5/129): From the modern academic resources that are available to us, it may be understood that the mermaid, which is called Sirène in French, is a mythical creature that is described in fairy tales as having an upper body like a woman and a lower half like a fish.

[…]

Many of the fuqaha’ mentioned mermaids and differed on the ruling concerning them. Some of them said that they are permissible (to eat) because of the general meaning of the evidence which says that whatever is in the sea is permissible. This is the view of the Shaafa’is and Hanbalis, and is the view of most of the Maalikis and of Ibn Hazm and others. And some of them regarded it as haraam because it is not a kind of fish. This is the view of the Hanafis and of al-Layth ibn Sa’d.

Ibn Hazm (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Muhalla (6/50): As for that which lives in the water and cannot live anywhere else, it is all halaal no matter what state it is in, whether it is caught alive and then dies, or it dies in the water and then floats or does not float, whether it was killed by a sea creature or a land animal. It is all halaal to eat, whether it is the pig of the sea (i.e., a dolphin), a mermaid, or a dog of the sea (i.e., shark) and so on. It is halaal to eat, whether it was killed by an idol-worshipper, a Muslim, a kitaabi (Jew or Christian) or it was not killed by anyone. The proof of that is the verses in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And the two seas (kinds of water) are not alike: this is palatable, sweet and pleasant to drink, and that is salt and bitter. And from them both you eat fresh tender meat (fish)” [Faatir 35:12] and “Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water game and its use for food — for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel” [al-Maa’idah 5:64]. Allaah spoke in general terms and did not exclude anything, “and your Lord is never forgetful” [Maryam 19:64]. End quote.

Al-Durayr – a Maaliki scholar – said in al-Sharh al-Sagheer (2/182): Sea animals in general are permissible, whether it is dead meat or a ‘dog’ (shark) or a ‘pig’ (dolphin), and they do not need to be slaughtered properly. End quote.

Al-Saawi said in his commentary on that: The words “or a ‘dog’ or a ‘pig’ also include a ‘human’, referring thereby to mermaids. End quote.

Read the whole ruling as it gets more disturbing. As an aside it is simply insane to claim it should be an accepted practice to eat fish you find dead of unknown causes, and the above seems to indicate Muslims can eat alive, including mermaids. Again, you need not be Freud to get a handle on what we’re talking about here.

But think about this for a second. A Muslim comes across a beautiful naked woman with a fish tail instead of legs on a beach and technically he can begin tearing out chunks of her flesh while she’s still alive and it’s considered acceptable behavior? This is a religion worthy of universal respect? This is a religion above criticism? I’m an Islamophobe for being disgusted by this?

How would people treat Christians if they were allowed to rape any elf or fairy they caught? What would people think of Jews if they went on an annual hunt to try to catch and eat Santa Claus? Though you know such a thing wouldn’t be possible, wouldn’t you be able to make a judgment about the religion, or at least its adherents, just from what they considered acceptable? With Islam, however, no matter how many bizarre and barbaric practices they promote we in the West are steadfast in not passing any kind of value judgment, no matter how badly needed that judgment is.

I just hope Bambi the Mermaid has extra security at the next Coney island Mermaid Parade.

  1. Rob Taylor,

Even through mermaids are not real, I’ve got to admit I find this disturbing.

  2. Off course I find most of Jihadist (aka Muslim fundamentalist) thinking disturbing, so its no surprise.

  3. Not that I wouldn’t find it disturbing if anyone else thought this would be okay.

  4. Maybe they’d better provide more security for the gals down at Weeki Wachee, too. Do you think they’d eat the mermen, too?

I find it disturbing, even if they aren’t real. When I was growing up, we visited Weeki Wachee often, and I truly believed that the mermaids there were real. (And I still believe in Faries! 😉 The whole thing almost sounds like a Neil Gaiman novel in the making… a hunt for creatures of fantasy.

Of course, I consider dolphins to be far too intelligent for use as food (and far more intelligent than most humans I’ve met. So I find even that idea disturbing and barbaric.

  6. What a silly post. Normally I appreciate your anti-drug posts and the like, but this doesn’t belong here. The mermaid is fictional, regardless of if an Islamic site says “subject to further discussion.” Further – that Islam QA answer is clearly answering a silly question to begin with. Why would anyone ask “is it permitted to eat a fictional animal?” And the answer given (although I would argue that question doesn’t warrant an answer at all) – is quite scholarly. This fatwa or whatever is basically saying the same thing in the Bible, which is all animals from the sea are made permissible for us to eat. If the question was “can we eat unicorns?” I’m guessing the answer would be “Sure if they are slaughtered under an Islamic manner.” So what? No crime done here.

I mean – it’s a silly question with a good answer I guess. But this post and this article doesn’t belong here – it’s not a “red alert”. It’s simply talking about Muslims and what God has made permissible for them to eat, which is pretty similar to strict Catholics as well. All due respect – this post has wasted my time.

  7. Kevin that’s silly. The point is that if mermaids were real (and many people in Muslim countries still believe they are) they would be sentient half humans. Unicorns would be basically horses with horns. The point is that Muslim law allows the consumption of hybrid humans, creatures that would look, speak and feel like a Muslim. This is completely different than the other two Abrahamic faiths.

You and I both know that Catholics wouldn’t eat a woman with a fish tail. Western civilization looks down on eating Parrots, Dogs and Cats but you’re claiming it’d be accept to eat a creature that could hold a conversation with you and looked like you from the waist up? Doubtful.

The point here is two fold. The first is that the hyper misogynist Islamic culture produces sexually sadistic individuals. The history of rulings on eating creatures that in the west were considered sexually enticing is an example of that inherent sexual sadism. Had you and I found a note written by Ted Bundy that said he thought about making mermaid sushi we would nod our head knowingly and file that away as yet another expression of his deviance. Why is it different with Muslims?

The second is that Islam really is stuck in the 7th century. I love a good crypto zoological discussion as much as the next guy but this story, like the stories of Muslims believing Jews put AIDS in melons or aphrodisiacs in chewing gum; demonstrate the stunted and unrealistic view of reality Islam encourages. Are their mermaids? Maybe in the occult sense but there is no biological reality to such myths. Muslim piety requires that modern practitioners emulate the first Muslims as much as possible, including in their benighted beliefs.

I’m not a Christian myself so I hate being in the position of defending them but claiming that the Bible claims everything in the ocean can be eaten is wrong. And remember we’re talking about a theoretical human that lives in the sea, not a fish. I doubt a Christian would eat a mermaid if they found one.

As for your “wasted time” since you were cruising blogs in the middle of the day I’ll assume you weren’t at work. Did I pull you away from some good porn or a World of Warcraft?

  8. kevin,

You know, even if we were talking about a creature that was real, and didn’t look like a human at all, but thought like a human, it would still be a sick idea to think it was okay to eat one. If ET (the Creature from the creature from the Spielberg movie was real) would you, or any other civilized person not be disgusted with anyone who thought it would be okay to eat one?

I have a problem with animal rights activists who think it should be illegal to eat meat, but if cows not only understood human speech, but in addition actually started doing things like carrying around protest signs demanding the liberation of their fellow cows, don’t you think that you would have a problem with people who ate hamburgers?

  9. I think you’re all missing the point of this guy’s response. It really was meant as a joke. The question was not a sincere question – as the author was never thinking “just in case I come across a mermaid one day.” I mean really – Muslims have their own baggage of course but they’re not all ultra good or ultra bad. They’re pretty much as diverse as any other group. Some of them are wicked smart, others are really really stupid, some lead, some follow, some are funny, others are boring, and some practice while others sin. So this clown – whoever it was – who posted such a question to this QA board – don’t take it seriously. Come on – let’s use our own intelligence here.

As far as the answer goes – this is one “imam” or whatever and his opinion – as opposed to a broad based belief or ruling in the Quran. It’s not like Muslims walk around saying “Well if things really suck at least I can go eat a hot mermaid!” Be realistic guys! If you’re really trying to understand what this ‘religion of peace’ entails, let’s do some research. Let’s act like adults. I’m not trying to be mean – but really – this post does not belong here because it is a silly question, silly answer, and silly premise. If one Muslim halfway across the globe says one thing, does that mean all Muslims believe it? Doubtful.

  10. You didn’t read the answer. It isn’t one Imam, it is a respected Imam’s transmission of hundreds of years of other respected commentary by respected scholars considered to be the foundation of Islamic jurisprudence.

If one Muslim says there is no god but Allah are you saying there is some leeway for Muslims? The jurisprudence we’re talking about is used by millions of Muslims to inform their opinions. This jurisprudence includes a form of cannibalism being acceptable. Your point is because there are no such thing as mermaids this is irrelevant, but there is no such think as Allah either. Does that mean rulings about Islam are as a whole are irrelevant?

There is no paradise for murderers and rapists, yet Islamic jurisprudence allows suicide bombers and the scum who raped and killed those little girls in Belsen the belief that they will go to heaven. All of Islam is untrue, yet that doesn’t invalidate the importance of the things they believe in understanding them.

When Muslims claim Jews put AIDS in Melons we know it isn’t true, but isn’t it instructive? White nationalism is full of untrue theories, all of which instruct us as to the character of the ideology. To understand a person or group you must learn not just facts about them, but what fallacies they themselves believe in.

  11. For muslims to eat to mermaid (half Fish half woman) , its Haraam (Not allowed to eat). Becase marmaid fish is have a half human body , to eat the human in Islamic Religion is Haraam (Ban for eat or not allowed to eat). In the Islamic Religion Human is created by GOD, human is most powerfull , priceus things in world. So GOD not allowed to eat Human body & Half human body. .,……..

  12. lmfaooooooo your so dumb. are you kidding me? LOOOOOL. this legit made me laugh. first of all clearly you are not a Muslim and you dont know shit. And second of all, they’re allowed to eat anything in the SEA. no one said anything about a fucking mermaid. This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. MERMAIDS ARE FAKE for one fact and for two, Muslims follow whats written in the Quran and please, do tell, me where you see in there that we can eat mermaids and elves and fairies. lmfao get over yourself.

  13. and YES, our argument is with the Imam who released this. Muslims can not eat humans and a mermaid is HALF a human. You don’t know what the hell your talking about. You’re pathetic.
