Cultural Cringe?

I never heard the term before reading this article from the Daily Telegraph describing the over the top teeth gnashing of the Australian left in the wake of President Bush’s visit to the Apec conference hosted in Sydney:

THERE is a two-word phrase that is so uniquely Australian that its very utterance evokes cliched images of a sunburnt country and the like.

I’m talking, of course, about cultural cringe, which is so woven into the fabric of the Australian psyche that it pops up with little effort at all, even at a time when you thought it had been discarded, finally, as last century’s baggage.

It hasn’t. When the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, flew into town last week for the 19th annual APEC meeting, the Cultural Cringers couldn’t help themselves.

There they were, the determined self-flagellators, flooding the talkback radio lines moaning about what they saw as Australia’s and Prime Minister Howard’s misplaced but slavish devotion to the US and President Bush.

What’s wrong with us, they whimpered, wailing even more when the President said America had no better friend than Australia. They whined about the inconvenience of roadblocks caused by the presidential motorcade: did he really need that many gas-guzzlers? they griped.

One wondered why, out loud on radio, the President brought his own chefs as if the local talent wasn’t good enough. I’m not making this up.

There were those who even asked why Australia had to host the President at all.

What they all seemed to have collectively ignored was that Australia, and Sydney, in particular, was also hosting 20 other nation members of the APEC community, 11 of which have been attending APEC meetings since they first began in 1989.

Why now, why here? Because it was our turn, not because Mr Howard was kissing up to Mr Bush.

So obsessed are the Cringers about feeling inferior to the US on Australia’s behalf they acted as if those 20 other nations didn’t exist.

The focus was singularly anti-American and prescriptively anti-Bush and anti-Howard. And it was embarrassing.

Cultural Cringe. It’s a good term and it describes the American hating leftist behavior here as well as in Australia. Read essays like this one from DailyKos or this one from Pandagon and you’ll realize that many people are simply embarrassed to be part of the west and hateful of it’s leaders due to years of liberal pablum spewed from left leaning teachers and talking heads of the media. Pam Spaulding should get a special regard, as it takes real visceral hatred of Bush and America combined with emotional immaturity and intellectual dishonesty, to cite Pravda who in turn are citing the Stalinist, Pro-Milosevic Worker’s World.

She’s got a raging case of cultural cringe. I just made that up, and I’m going to use it ad nauseum.

Sicko Fun Fact: Canada Doesn’t Care About Prostates

A shortage of urologists has become so pronounced that patients’ lives are at risk, managers of a St. John’s-based health authority have been warned.

In a powerfully worded letter to the Eastern Health regional authority, urologist Dr. Douglas Drover said an “excessive volume of work” in the specialty has meant waiting times of almost a year for patients seeking treatment.

Drover, who was attending a medical conference last week, was not available for an interview with CBC News.

However, his letter lays out a litany of problems. For instance, about 300 patients are waiting for operating room time so that surgery can be performed.

Drover is one of just seven urologists practising in Newfoundland and Labrador. He urged Eastern Health to hire more specialists, warning that not to do so would be “tantamount to medical negligence.”

Andy Grant, a member of a prostate cancer support group in St. John’s, said he is afraid that people will die — or already have — while waiting for surgery.

“First of all, [patients deal with] the shock you might have prostate cancer, then the shock of being confirmed with prostate cancer,” he said. “Now you have the shock of saying, ‘I have to wait until next year?’ ”

New Democratic Party Leader Lorraine Michael said she was disturbed to learn of the problems that Drover outlined.

“I think the word I would use is ‘horrified.’ I could not believe what was in his letter,” she said.

“We’re sounding like we’re in a developing country and not in a province that has the resources that we have.”

Odd, here in America where the markets run wild and free our prostates live in constant fear of being prodded by some private medical practitioner. In socialist Canada prostates live sheltered lives of isolation and seclusion until their owners die a painful death from cancer.

I don’t know which I like better, being close to the age where someone will no doubt tell me that I need to be digitally sodomized by a doctor.

But technically the good ‘ol U.S.A. and our evil capitalist medical system wins this again. Take that hippies! Tila Tequila, we’re looking at you.

DailyKos Commits Treason! (Sort of)

At least it would be treason if the story was true. DailyKos diarist Maccabee apparently has some sort of imaginary girlfriend serving on an aircraft carrier who wants the brave patriots at Kos to tell the world the exact details of an upcoming attack on Iran.

As Macranger points out, there’s a word for this besides dissent:

I passed this post on to the ONI AG – Office of Naval Intelligence AG to have a look-see and see if they can find this young lady – if she exists and have a chat. An active duty officer on a ship preparing for operations giving out the op plans to said operation is called – treason.

Again, considering the source (Kos), buyer beware, but if true the poster who goes by the name “Maccabee” – will be having some visitors.

That would of course be if the report wasn’t some lefty wet dream, which is the general consensus on the subject. If it were true though, wouldn’t Maccabee be endangering her fellow soldiers by releasing details of the attack plan?

Is that how you support the troops?

Another Filthy Jihadist Pervert Claims Child Rape is Acceptable

The second YouTube video in as many months where a fairly young guy argues for marrying children based on Islamic values. His argument is straight from the undergraduate liberal arts textbook. He’s preaching moral relativism, the flip side of social science doctrine to view cultures without your inherent ethnocentrism. His argument is that since our (westerners) ethics aren’t universally accepted, it isn’t “ethical” to judge other cultures using our moral compass, but we should use the morals and ethics of the society we’re judging to judge them.

A comfortable enough argument for many people who are the product of western higher education, until you apply that standard to, let’s say, the murderous Nazi infested Germany of WW II or the blood soaked Aztec empire. In both those societies the brutal and barbaric murders of sacrificial victims (political for the Nazis, religious for the Aztec) were quite common place and accepted. Should we not judge them? Is the Holocaust acceptable because it conformed to the ethics of Germans at that time? Skinning unwilling people alive who were captured from other villages? Human experimentation? Child Sacrifice?

This is how Wahhabism lures young Muslims into it’s fold, by offering “perks” to its followers like sex slaves, murdering infidels and for those with the “short eyes” child brides.

Watch to be disgusted, it’s in two parts so settle in. Vid one starts slow, but the last three minutes will make any feminist worth their salt go ballistic. It’s also the verbatim argument made by Jihadi Pervert one who was from California. Odd that the someone from Canada would be repeating the same tripe. It’s almost as if their being self radicalized by hanging around a jihadi propaganda outlet:

I wonder if this guy’s willing to extend the same non-judgmental courtesy to our western traditions, though he’s pretty clearly applying his ethics to Canada in the first video. It’s like he’s just using some tired old college lefty’s lazy Thursday lecture to fool college kids into thinking being against the sexualization, objectification, and exploitation of little girls is Islamophobia.

Yawn! White Liberals at the BBC Might be Racists

The award-winning screenwriter Jimmy McGovern accused the BBC of institutional racism yesterday, saying the only black people working there were in low-pay jobs. Interviewed on BBC Radio Five Live, the creator of the popular crime drama Cracker criticized the corporation, telling the presenter, Simon Mayo: “I work quite a lot at the BBC. You see a lot of black faces in the BBC, but you see them in the canteen.”

The Liverpool-born writer, whose BBC drama The Street won a Bafta award earlier this year, added that the BBC was “one of the most racist institutions in Britain”. McGovern, 57, who has also written for the Channel 4 soap Brookside, continued: “You don’t see [black people] in positions of power.”

Within minutes of his comments, made during a live debate on racism, and Mayo’s subsequent request for a response from the BBC, a spokesman came on air to defend the corporation, which has 26,000 staff in Britain. He said the BBC was constantly searching for new talent from ethnic minority groups but admitted there were challenges. “It is something we are always looking to improve on,” he added.

Later, the BBC released an official statement, saying that an accurate reflection of viewers and listeners was the chief concern. “What really matters is that we reflect our audiences through our programmes,” it said. “The BBC’s ambition is to reflect the ethnic and social mix of people around the country and we are actively seeking and nurturing ethnic talents, both on and off-air.”

The broadcaster then highlighted recent programmes it claimed had reflected this, with a list including Freema Agyeman, the Doctor Who actress whose mother is Iranian and father Ghanaian, the forthcoming show DanceX, featuring the British-Iranian comedian Omid Djalili, and dramas such as Waterloo Road.

Notice the BBC’s defense to charges of institutionalized racism against Blacks is to point out they’ve hired people of middle eastern descent. Or really of Persian descent, Persians are of course Aryans. It’s shocking that people who preach multiculturalism, the idea that ethnic groups should maintain their separate traditions and in essence ghettoize themselves, would themselves prefer to “stick with their own” and surround themselves with people just like them. Shocking if you are yourself shockingly niave.

Conservatives have argued this point for years, pointing out time and again that the media was little more than an effete neo-socialist echo chamber populated by mediocre writers who dropped out of their MFA programs.

Now it’s supposed to be shocking that they are primarily White.

Stop the presses! You mean people who think it’s more important to “go green” and protest corporations supposed malfeasance than to feed a family of five on $20,000 a year with cheap groceries from Wal Mart are all the sheltered spawn of people for whom a trip to a big box store is “slumming?” Perish the thought, I thought reporters were gritty, street wise characters who knew what the word on the street was.

The BBC is as White as a Klan meeting, as is the New York Times and every other media outlet. This likely skews their view, and this report from The Independent might have been quite the shocker. In 1992.

It’s time we stopped pretending to be shocked at what kinds of people end up in Journalism, and start holding them accountable for their accuracy, objectiveness and ability to get the news out to the public. Those are things that even a White reporter can handle.
