Harsh? Not so fast gentle readers. 16-year-old Cyan Brown was almost gang raped in a wilding attack that began outside a New York restaurant and continued when eight thugs, led by career criminal Thomas Winston, dragged Brown off a subway train she had fled to. Of course being New York this all happened in front of witnesses who did nothing.
Luckily Cyan was able to defend herself, something which the authorities of New York frown upon. From The Daily News:
Several thugs tried to drag a woman off a Queens subway train Thursday night, but she fought back and fatally stabbed one of her tormenters before fleeing on another train, police said.
The large group of men – perhaps as many as eight – surrounded the woman outside a chicken restaurant above the 21st St.-Queensbridge station about 9 p.m., police and a witness said.
The harassment, which may have included unwanted sexual advances toward the woman and grabbing, continued as she entered the subway station.
The woman broke free from the men and frantically ran down to the platform and hopped on an F train, with the thugs right behind.
“They tried to physically drag her off the train, but she fights back,” one cop said.
The struggle continued as the group pulled her off the train and dragged her up the stairs to the mezzanine level.
At one point, the woman stabbed one of her attackers – identified by family as Thomas Winston, 29 – multiple times in the chest.
The woman then sprinted back down to the platform – with the thugs in hot pursuit, said witness Ricardo Josephs, 41.
“Seven or eight of them were chasing the woman,” said Josephs, an MTA employee.
“They all jumped over the turnstiles after her,” he continued. “She got on the Queens [-bound F] train. They tried to grab her; they tried to hold the train – but she got away.”
Winston, who lives in a nearby shelter and has a 10-month-old daughter, was pronounced dead at a Manhattan hospital.
The article goes on to point out that Winston had “numerous” arrests in his past. A follow up story relates that he had faced attempted murder charges. His family, however, claims he was just an innocent bystander, which must be why the teen victim is in hiding:

Although police have not disclosed any official suspects, Brown’s family said detectives have been trying to contact the girl in connection with Winston’s death.
“The guys tried to feel up my daughter and the next thing I know, someone was knocking on my door saying Cyan stabbed someone,” said Erika Brown, 40, the teen’s mother.
Winston, who lived in a nearby shelter, had a long list of prior convictions that included criminal possession of a weapon and selling narcotics and also faced an attempted murder charge, sources said.
But Winston’s cousin Tedra Laws, 31, said he was never in the subway station, but was trying to catch a cab to bring a present to his daughter.
Detectives should be looking for the rest of Winston’s gang, not harassing the family of Cyan Brown. Brown not only defended herself admirably, but she has stopped Winston from victimizing any other women. She is a hero and doesn’t deserve to be treated like a criminal.
Winston, however, got exactly what he deserved.
Update: Cops are claiming that this was an altercation between tow groups and Winston got stabbed after demanding her friend apologize for bumping into one of his. In other words Cyan was a thug and Winston, who was supposedly turning his life around (by traveling the streets with a gang of thugs looking to fight people for bumping into them) died as he lived:

Brown turned herself in for questioning yesterday at the 114th Precinct.

Hmmm. Like I said in the comments the cops in New York aren’t big on self-defense. Winston and company went looking for a fight and got one from some of their fellow hoodrats. Rather than call an ambulance and try to staunch the flow of blood, or call a cop, when Winston got stabbed his so called friends kept fighting. Since Winston was charged with attempted murder just recently I’m not crying.
Of course, all these people who claimed you can’t trust the cops story when they say Winston may have started the altercation are now claiming the cops are 100% right after sweating a confession out of a teen. A confession that the NYPD was, allegedly, under pressure to get since the story was making the city look unsafe. But whatevs. I don’t buy it but the cops got her to admit to causing the fight which makes the city happy and shuts down criticism of a city that allows gangs of thugs to get out of control.
So did Thomas Winston deserve to die? I’ll let the person he recently tried to kill decide. Is Cyan Brown a hero? Not if she got stabby during an argument. But how is a teen girl and a couple of her firneds the “main aggressors” against eight or nine adults? Not buying it.
Update: If Cyan was the main aggressor who just stabbed Winston out of the blue why is she being charged with manslaughter rather than murder?

Nekayba I guess you don’t remember the Puerto Rican day Parade attacks back around 2000 where several women were raped and assaulted by a gang of men in full view of hundreds of witnesses? I lived in NYC too and criminals there don’t care if you see them or not. These guys were up to no good and got what was coming to them.
I am some where between Tony and those that are peering through a more humanitarian lens. We need to govern with truth. In the same way an innocent person should not go to jail because of the victims high standing in society we should not allow the guilty to go free because of the victims problematic past. If we believe criminals can’t move forward then why should they even try? Society will continue to spiral downward if every one who dose something stupid is not allowed to grow.
It’s equally important that false victims of every kind be identified because the bigger the story gets the more it hurts the credibility of real victims if proven false. I could be wrong but this story fails to set right with me either. It is a caricature of a victimization reality and plays on a stereotype to even seem plausible. It just doesn’t seem to make sense. Why is this girl hiding? Her reality can’t be that twisted to think that she has done anything wrong if the story told is accurate.
I wouldn’t put it past some men to do something like this, but 30 year olds in broad daylight? Even in New York, eight grown men chasing a teenage girl wasn’t a very strategic plan? Something had to happen for them to do something so visually suspect.
I agree with Tony life it too valuable to be wishing people dead, the recklessness of such a cruel statement is becoming way to common. I also think it’s manipulative to say Tony was involved with this story because he sees holes in it. Although the way his blog was written does seem to indicate a deeper emotional tie.
Lastly, there are alternate versions of this story surfacing. I am not saying this is what happened, but the chaotic way that this witness account reads is more inline with the randomness in which these crimes usually happen. It also paints a picture where no one is completely innocent and would justify why this young girl may be in hiding. If this is true she’s still young and full condemnation should not be justified, but she just may not be the angelic warrior people are painting her to be. That being said lets move past prejudgment and choose our martyrs more carefully 🙂
By the way, the others involved don’t tell what happened because whole communities have been victimized by the police and court systems so much that they don’t trust the justice system. Foolish as it may seem, whole communities would rather live with injustice (or the laws of karma) than to help a unfair system of justice operate. This rule of not snitching is extremely strong with criminals and past criminals, you lose all credibility as a person if you should help the police on anything. It’s kind of like the code of the blue shield in reverse. Sometimes there is a very thin line between cops and robbers.
its easy to say all of this and that just hearing the story with no background knowledge. I can assure you that the “victim” and the “gang” all knew eachother simply because we’re all from the same neighborhood. to jump to conclusions in this case wouldnt be right without having the background knowledge.

At least 24 women were raped and assaulted by crowds of young men in front of crowds of New Yorkers too scared to stop them. At least one rape happened in while a Police officer was being told about others but the cops never went to break it up.
A crowd of men even stripped a french tourist naked while holding her husband and making him watch. This incident is why the PR Day parade has such a bad rap with many people.

Winston was a career criminal who had just recently been accused of attempted murder. Cyan Brown is a child. Witnesses saw a group of men, INCLUDING WINSTON (I’ll use all caps since you like doing that so much) harass her. Thus is my opinion that he got what was coming to him.
I understand that New York public schools aren’t particularly good (having worked in New York in Youth programs) but at least learn the difference between a theory and an opinion. You don’t have a theory either, unless you are talking about your conspiracy theory about how this is a cover up by racist cops and media … to protect a Black girl. Rob, OMGs… so Tony is in “virtual drag”? I mean, really, Mark claimed to be a “female” (which, as someone who has known many, many drag queens, that is just a dead give-away. Seriously. Right up there with saying “fingernails” as opposed to “nails”… *real* women will say “I’m getting my nails done”, while men pretending to be women will say “I’m getting my fingernails done”. To a man, a nail is something used to hold two pieces of wood together. To a woman, it’s generally something used to hold bright red paint on the end of her finger.)

Using loaded “color” words is not specific to being a “white liberal” as you have naively stated. Being a black man from East Orange, does not give you a pass for blurring the lines of truth. You are simply running the risk of distorting the facts with your image based “color” language.
Robby you should be quite aware of image loaded words. It could be coincidence but maybe you shortened your first name from Robert because of the similarity to one of Chicago’s most notorious housing projects. But that would just be stooping to your level to say this with out speculation and fact based proof.
In ideal society there should not be two sets of rules and your diatribe speaks clearly to your lack of understanding of something so fundamental. The guilt you obviously felt is not race based it’s just the impact of truth hitting home. We both know your emotion loaded language and slander is simply a distraction to draw us away from the truth. That being said, back to my bread and butter.
I simply gave you a second perspective no one can logically ignore based on the facts up to that date. Your emotional tirade means little in a pursuit of real truth. See the truth is what helps me sleep so soundly. If I did live with my mother it doesn’t erase the logic behind what I am saying. It would just make me societies untapped potential based on my undeniable brilliance. I would also be free of a mortgage and moving to the coast of spain in 10 years with all the money I would save 🙂
SOOOOoo what good is all this sympathy if it is not for a real victim? How real is the plight you paint if you don’t know the facts? My warning is that you hurt a very worthwhile cause looking for unjustified sympathy. Especially if this turns out to be a criminal and not a victim. There have been cases where abducted teenagers have gone missing and the police did not investigate because of these larger than life cry wolf stories. One was found dead in Chicago several months back and their wasn’t even an alert put out to save her life.
So every time one of these stories gets big because of your self servant emotion inducing imagery it hurts the credibility of real victims everywhere. You know those you supposedly support, real sufferers of crimes from very real destructive predators.
Whatever this deceased gentle man was in life, if he wasn’t a child molester he shouldn’t be considered one because it sounds good to you and any idiot who dare follow your rants. Based on any account I don’t defend his character just the truth. If he and the seven supposedly sex frenzied gentleman were just that then let the truth surface naturally. But judging by the police focus I don’t think they see it this way either or the search would be focused on the 7 attackers.
Do you really think the NYPD decided to ignore them because they had in for a sweet 16 year old girl protecting herself from 8 sex fiends? There is no place for vengeance just real solutions. Cyan is a victim however this story may have happened. This is because I don’t believe a 16 year old reaches the point of being able to easily murder with out years of neglect. I hope that she can recover from what ever happened on that day. It can’t be easy to live with.
So I ask you Robby, if this turns out to be something other than what the initial story has us to believe, what have you done for real victims by ignoring the facts?
Maybe you are not cut out for this blogging thing “Robert Taylor” it takes an open mind to do so. We need truth seekers not color commentators looking to distort reality for the sake of getting public support. False sentiment is becoming way to common, either truly care or don’t show up.
