College Presidents (and Perverts) Band Together to Lower the Drinking Age

It’s called the Amethyst Initiative and according to proponents the current drinking age encourages binge drinking in people under 21. Yeah, that’s exactly what they’re saying:

College presidents from about 100 of the nation’s best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age.

“This is a law that is routinely evaded,” said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont who started the organization. “It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory.”

Other prominent schools in the group include Syracuse, Tufts, Colgate, Kenyon and Morehouse.

But even before the presidents begin the public phase of their efforts, which may include publishing newspaper ads in the coming weeks, they are already facing sharp criticism.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. It accuses the presidents of misrepresenting science and looking for an easy way out of an inconvenient problem. MADD officials are even urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on.

“It’s very clear the 21-year-old drinking age will not be enforced at those campuses,” said Laura Dean-Mooney, national president of MADD.

Both sides agree alcohol abuse by college students is a huge problem.

Research has found more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependance. One study has estimated more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related in some way to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents.

A recent Associated Press analysis of federal records found that 157 college-age people, 18 to 23, drank themselves to death from 1999 through 2005.

Right. The fact is I’ve been clean and sober nearly eight years so I’m biased, but I can objectively tell you that binge drinking isn’t caused by having to hide your drinking or not being taught how to “drink right” but by the drinker’s inability to deal with various problems they have. Shyness, depression or the general ennui that develops in the young when their intellectual and spiritual lives are empty are more likely the culprits to binge drinking.

But Amethyst Initiative creator John McCardell Jr, who also is the founder of another group dedicated to lowering the drinking age called Choose Responsibility, would disagree with the above analysis and claim that people binge drink simply because they’re not allowed to drink with him or people his age. I’m nutshelling his position to be sure, but what these college presidents are advocating is for kids fresh out of high school to be able to accompany them to a bar. What they want is a wink and nudge college system where people like McCardell would be able to abdicate of their responsibility to provide guidance to their charges while every campus dorm becomes a set for Girls Gone Wild.

There’s something unseemly about people who work in a college advocating making it legal to get freshmen girls drunk. Maybe you have to spend as much time on college campuses as I did to really see it, but some of you know exactly what is driving this “initiative” to break down what I think is a good barrier between young adults not yet ready to make responsible decisions and the boomers who won’t grow up and stop trying to have sex with them.

But like I said, I’m biased toward staying sober so McCardell will say I’m just a prude. So will Robert Van Der Ohe though, and I’m sure he supports this nonsense.

M.A.D.D. is against this and they have some stats to back up their contention that raising the drinking age saved lives. The most important information they point to though, and key to understanding the nuances of the debate, is this SAMHSA study which shows that at least 40% of underage drinkers receive their alcohol free from a person over the age of 21. Or to translate: Old dudes like to get teens drunk to have sex with them.

There’s a site called Why 21 that also argues against lowering the drinking age.

Before the emails start I’d be fine with a lower drinking age if A) The people promoting it were honest about the facts of drinking and B) It wasn’t being pushed by some old dude from a state with liberal policies that have made it a haven for sex offenders which resulted in a higher rape rate. Pushing down the drinking age now will only give predators a larger pool of victims to prey on, and stop cops from arresting people prior to them committing a rape when found plying a teen with booze.

Barbarians in Pennsylvania Shoot Puppies to Avoid Vet Appointments

The Zimmerman brothers run puppy mills in rural Pennsylvania, you know, God fearing White Democrat country. When they were asked to take 39 of their poorly cared for animals to the vet, lovecraftian degeneracy ensued:

I guess like potato chips, you can never just stop at one brutal murder of a puppy with a .22 LR. If you’re wondering, no a .22 LR probably won’t kill a small dog in one shot which was probably the reason they used the round, to prolong the “fun.”

Pravda, Huffington Post Spreading Neo-Soviet Propaganda

They must get the same talking points sent to them. How else do you explain the eerily similar wording of these two screeds accusing Republicans of starting the war between Georgia and Russia as a way to shore up support for John McCain in November?

From Putin propaganda outfit Pravda:

The USA is pursuing absolutely different goals, and the creation of the Great Georgia is surely not on its list. The Republicans organized the provocation to portray Russia as a monster on the globe on the threshold of the November elections. This plays into the hands of John McCain, who openly says that “Russia’s imperial ambition” needs to be curbed.

Now this from Blake Fleetwood writing at HuffPo:

In classic “Wag The Dog” scenario there is a neat little war brewing between American and Russian proxies, and real Russian troops, in the Caucacus Mountains on the Russian border.

It couldn’t come at a better time for the Republicans.

McCain gets to act and talk tough against the Russians, while Obama is on vacation in Hawaii, issuing “can’t we all get along statements.”

It perfectly augments Republican campaign points: Obama is not ready. He is not tough, experienced enough to deal with a dangerous world.

McCain knows he can’t win the election on Iraq or Iran or the economy. Republicans need a real boogeyman — the Russian bear — armed with nuclear weapons — to really scare the bejesus out of the American voters.

Pretty close, though Pravda is able to be more succinct. Alex Jones has also gotten on board with the Republican plot thesis, so they’re in good company.

Filthy Pedophile Cuts Own Throat in Court

It shouldn’t shock anyone that a degenerate wouldn’t even have the decency to attempt suicide in private. Nor that his attempt was half-assed to say the least. From the A.P.:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A Massachusetts man is recovering after slashing his own throat upon hearing his conviction of assaulting a child.

Donald Gibson pulled a sharp object from his pocket and cut himself while a court clerk read the verdict Friday. Prosecutor James Orenstein says officers knocked Gibson to the ground and disarmed him.

The 39-year-old man was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office says the object was a piece of battery casing about the size of a quarter.

Gibson was convicted of indecent assault and battery on an 11-year-old. He was acquitted of a third count.

Way to run a secure court room Massachusetts. Let’s hope next time this pervert is successful in his attempt, and that no innocent bystander gets hurt.

L.A. Hospitals Used Homeless People to Defraud Medicare

A conspiracy of soulless monsters preyed upon our most vulnerable citizens and worse often gave these people treatments they didn’t need in an effort to suck extra money from the government teat. From The Los Angeles Times:

On a Sunday afternoon two years ago, five homeless people being dropped off on Los Angeles’ skid row by an ambulance caught the attention of police officers.

The officers videotaped what they thought was a case of hospitals dumping patients in a section of the city where few would notice or care.

But as investigators began to unravel the incident, they say they found something far different: a massive scheme to defraud taxpayer-funded healthcare programs of millions of dollars by recruiting homeless patients for unnecessary medical services.

The elaborate enterprise churned thousands of indigents through hospitals over the last four years and billed Medicare and Medi-Cal for costly and unjustified medical procedures, federal, state and local investigators said Wednesday.

Those involved in the alleged conspiracy “ranged from street-level operatives to the chief executive of a hospital,” U.S. Atty. Thomas P. O’Brien said.

After raids on three hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties Wednesday, one hospital chief executive faces criminal charges and executives at two other facilities were accused of fraudulent business practices in a related civil lawsuit filed by Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo.

Some of the homeless patients involved received tests or treatments that were potentially harmful, authorities said.

Authorities said they were shocked by the “depravity” of the scheme and go on to recount several incidents where people’s lives were in danger from unneeded treatments, including a woman who received a Nitro patch for a non-existent heart condition which caused her blood pressure to drop to life threatening levels.

I however am not shocked by any amount of depravity when it comes to the sanctimonious “non-profit” industry whose main goal has always been to milk the country of money using the good works of we few who were dedicated to the ideals of selfless service.
