Call me old-fashioned but I’m not big on calling women “whore” or some permutation of the word, especially women who are trying to do something good for someone. To me the only time it might be appropriate to make such a reference is when a woman has done something especially horrid, like Shana Brown, a woman I happily referred to as a gutterslut when she was caught drugging her 13-year-old daughter so her boyfriend could rape her.
Outside of that level of depravity I think it’s disgusting to call a woman a slut or whore. I don’t care if they are Internet models, porn stars, strippers or the girl you know who is cheating on her boyfriend, it is immature misogyny to call a woman a whore simply because you happen to not like or approve of some facet of their life. It is a crass and unmanly position to take in all but the most extreme circumstances.
Shamefully there are those that disagree and happily attempt to degrade any woman that draws their petty ire. During the ’08 elections I wrote about adult film actress Gauge suffering outrageous personal attacks from her “fans” after writing what was essentially Republican boiler plate about supporting John McCain because she was pro-life and pro-Second Amendment. In that case there was a hypocritical element to the attacks because she was abused with comments like this:
Hey Gauge, I just watched a video of you fucking 5 guys. Please tell us again how wrong irresponsible sex is. I’ve seen a lot of your work but you never had the guys wear condoms. Don’t you think it’s irresponsible to engage in unsafe sex? How many STD’s have you had? Considering how big a skank you are, I bet you’ve had a lot. Well since your boy McCain is crashing and burning, I can’t wait for the election. Obama is going to win in a landslide.
This of course from someone who watches her movies. This liberal, as I said on that post, viewed women like Gauge as de facto sex slaves who perform deviant acts for their pleasure and aren’t entitled to be anything more that a girl on a DVD doing things that are marketed to people whose self-loathing and anger makes them want to see attractive women degraded. I don’t like modern pornography, which has replaced hedonism with humiliation and decadence with degradation, but the people who attacked Gauge are fans of that. They are the ones who should be ashamed, not Gauge.
Now in a similar incident Tila Tequila was apparently called a whore by “Perez Hilton”after pictures of her in lingerie and a trenchcoat showed up on gossip blogs. The rotund celebrity parasite didn’t provide his emotionally stunted followers the context for these photos apparently. It seems the world’s most famous Internet model was raising money for a breast cancer charity:

Think what you want of Tila Tequila, and I happen to think she exemplifies Capitalism and American exceptionalism as I’ve said before, but here’s a woman taking time to help the Keep-a-Breast foundation and while doing that she is called a whore by not just a narcissistic star-stalker but by the rabble of ne’er-do-wells who seem to travel from website to website calling this person who they’ll never meet and will have no effect on their lives vile names. My question is why?
There’s an essay by Anton LaVey (I think it’s in The Devil’s Notebook but I’m not sure) in which he examines misogyny and comes to the conclusion that the misogynist is competing with women for male attention, and his anger derives from his failure to win that competition. Using such now eyebrow raising phrases as “closeted homosexual” for men like this he implies that they are predominantly stunted people who live in a permanent state of semi-girlish pre-adolescence. With the ever more misogynist pornography, attacks on female political figures and and the abandonment of the ideas of womanhood being something to respect I think this essay has become more important than ever.
Were this simply a spat between two celebrities this story would be meaningless but Perez Hilton’s brand of envious misogyny has become an acceptable stance for men to have regarding women. One need only check the comments on some YouTube video or article that allows comments to see men partaking in what is essentially gender specific class envy where women like Tila Tequila are claimed to be deserving of abuse simply because they are successful.
The same jealousy and misanthropy that drives class warfare drive the hatred of pretty, rich and famous women who a large segment of our society believes are “whores” for simply living their own lives. That would be bad enough itself but in this instance a woman doing a good deed, one that anyone who has the opportunity to do should do, is being attacked for no other reason than that it is now acceptable to treat women poorly in our society.
Call me “Conservative” but I believe in respecting women, even ones you may not agree with. I don’t believe in infantilizing women by any means, I think respecting a person means treating them as individuals equal to yourself, but I simply won’t accept that it is O.K. for a man to call a woman a whore simply because she has a photo of herself in lingerie when she’s basically a lingerie model. I don’t think it’s acceptable to encourage degradation in porn by buying the mot extreme forms of it, then claim adult film actresses are skanks for working in the industry which you created. I think men should reserve name calling for the Shana Browns of the world, not women who are simply minding their own business.
I’m not a misogynist. I like women, even ones I disagree with, and think that all are worthy of respect. But it seems that this is a minority view these days.

Katie and Lisa – Rob is usually very generous with his time when it comes to engaging readers in debate. However, as you can see, this essay has generated a lot of interest and I would guess, a huge volume of troll/spam comments that need to be moderated. That takes time and your desire for instant gratification isn’t going to speed things up.
So, Lisa in particular, there’s no need to be rude because Rob isn’t prioritizing the debate in which you’re most interested. I’m sure Rob would freely admit that Perez Hilton is more knowledgeable about how to write link and traffic bait in the catty gossip blogger genre. But why should he entertain your demands for a response when you’ve shown up at his house with shit on your boots?

Patrick b: I must agree with you there. It seems the holier-than-thou types come out in droves to dismiss any good someone does if that someone isn’t their patterned idea of “wholesome” (as we’ve seen quite clearly on this post).
I have my issues with the porn industry that involve their excessive problems with producing legitimate birth certificates to prove their actresses are the AOC. Furthermore, porn films have embedded fantastical ideas in men of how they believe a woman should behave in the bedroom that are far beyond respect women should be shown. One could make a very good case, however, that it is the man watching more so than the porn telling a fictitious tale. I believe it is a combination of both; however, those personal opinions do not change the fact that adults have the right to their sexual gratification (as long as no one is being victimized) and no one has the right to police another’s bedroom.
In the case of this post, there is also the underlying issue of how women are viewed in society for embracing their sexuality. Women like Tila, Britney, and Angelina Jolie are called whores and fake and trashy by jealous (camouflaged by piousness) women and hypocritical monkey-spanking men; while men like Mathew McConaughey, Tyrese, and Vin Diesel can flaunt their flesh as bare as they dare and be drooled over by the same women and idolized by the same men.
It’s evident that most people who came here did so with the mindset this site was yet another celeb gossip rag because the quality of comments by those tearing the post and Rob and Tila to shreds do so with the attack that this is all about Tila and Perez Hilton. What Tila did to earn this attention was a wonderful gesture for a great cause, but the attack on her was merely picked up by an intellectual crime blogger who has a talent for seeing beyond the scope of the story and into a study in human behavior.
I’ll wager most people here attacking him won’t hang around for any other post because they simply won’t understand what in the world he or his regular readers are talking about. They simply don’t have the maturity.
That this stirred up some issue regarding pornography is just another angle for this fascinating story, and you are quite right to say if someone doesn’t like it, they need only turn it off. Much like if someone doesn’t like what is in this blog, they need merely to hit the back button.
SMP: keep playing those “maturity” and “jealousy” angles, they are far easier and more fun than thinking about what is being said! It’s gotta be one or the other, right? Can’t be any middle ground. A sure sign of a mature mind! “My mommy is perfect and if you hate her I hate YOU!!”

But I think things are getting a little out of control – SMP is no clown, she’s a long time commenter who has earned the respect of other regular visitors with her commentary. SMP is also known to be fiercely loyal and protective of people she considers friends, so she jumped to the defense of Rob when the tone of your comments appeared antagonistic. The two of you are both opinionated, possibly even stubborn, and are butting heads because of that, but it’s growing tiresome and eventually someone will get banned and it won’t be a long time supporter of this blog.

SMP – “mouth breathers” is an insult typically used by liberals. The implication is that you breath through your mouth, not your nose, because you’re less evolved or less intelligent than they are. It’s especially favored by rabid atheists – you know, the kind who love to denigrate others while simultaneously proselytizing their atheism because they feel inadequate unless others support their opinions.
Jenn, that’s just the thing, I AM sticking to the points. I want to discuss the matter at hand but no one seems interested in that. If you read the interactions between SMP and I you will see that she refuses to discuss what I am actually saying and instead just insults me over and over. You seem like a reasonable person so I would ask you to read the back and forth and objectively decide who is trying to discuss the matter vs. who is throwing around insults.

While I’ll agree that the use of the word “whore” is entirely too common place and even in this situation unwarranted, it’s all about context. There’s something to be said for the adjective when someone shamefully promotes themselves, especially in a less than flattering way (which I believe Ms. “Tequila” certainly does). I think the phrase “media whore” would be more apt. I’ll be honest…this woman bores me to tears and annoys me to no end, but that doesn’t disqualify her from the basic congeniality afforded to any woman you pass on the street. The one major difference, however, is that 99.9% of those women don’t seek attention on the monumental scale that Tila Tequila does.by posting scantily clad photos of themselves for all the world to see. You speak of Perez Hilton as a parasite and, from what little I know about him, I couldn’t agree more. But look closly at Ms. Tequila. She’s made a mint off of her fans and, shy of a small amount of charity work, what has she contributed of use to society? A terrible album? A book full of droll, terrible dating advice? A TV show (and who knows how many spin offs) that create an issue where there doesn’t need to be one? I get it, she’s an attractive bi-sexual. So what? If anyone thinks for a second that her show had anything to do with love or any other emotion and was not simply a promotional vehicle, they are clearly insane.

I’m not going to lie, I read through quite a few of the comments, and also the dialogue between yourself and Katie. Both good points! I’m not going to weigh in because I feel like I’m way out of my league, but Rob I have a comment/question for you:
You made a funny comment about “unwarranted pretentiousness of the undergrad”, which really had me laughing! I am an undergrad myself, and I say this without any sarcasm, I truly find my writing lacking to a great degree. The advice I often get from my T.A.’s is to, quite literally, not be so pretentious. I’m a 3rd year Film/Communications student, and I feel like I’ve lost any writing touch I previously had.
Do you have any advice on making my papers more concise and, to a degree, cutting down on the wordiness?
Although this question may seem open, it’s directed specifically at you Rob. Thanks in advance if you can find it in your busy work schedule to answer me!

I believe your T.A.s may also be a bit pretentious if that’s their criticism of you but I’ll say wordiness isn’t (or I should say shouldn’t) be the issue but talking down to the audience is something many people do (including myself) that if not done purposefully is a bad habit. See? We can all be wordy.
So even when you’re explaining something pretend you’re talking to a peer, use copious references if necessary but remember it isn’t your job to Enlighten an audience, just present your findings/opinions etc. Some people who I won’t point out have an attitude that a little education has propelled them into the celestial spheres and their wisdom is now dripping from the heavens into their every keystroke. This is boorish behavior that most people won’t put up with, but when you work in academia you don’t have the luxury of simply ignoring (or sicking your trolls on) people who you aren’t interested in hearing from.
That being said I worked as an English tutor right after college (it was awful) and I wouldn’t be shocked to find your T.A.s were either too lazy to look up words they didn’t know or simply didn’t like seeing essays that were written better than the no doubt half-baked rehashes of whatever their prof said in class that got them that “esteemed” position. (Is there anyone sadder than a T.A.? I wonder quite pretentiously.) Do what you need to get your grade but don’t let anyone change your style of writing, even if it’s only appreciated by a few.
Lovecraft was considered wordy and pretentious too. But who remembers the people who said that?
College is about honing your skills, not letting people who end up hiding on a campus their entire life mold you into the kind of person who will hide on a campus his entire life. Learn from their reactions but if you have a sarcastic high-brow voice in your writing then that’s your Art. Don’t let them take that from you.

okay, i love tila, and i think that prez am idiot. Tila did something amazing, my aunt has breast cancer, and she is happy that one of my role models are going to be helping her foundation, that is going to help my aunt, because she is getting help from that foundation. so thanks tila!!!
