No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: The Savaging of Kurt Eichenwald

In 2005 when New York Times reporter Kurt Eichenwald published his expose of Internet child porn, an expose written after he, his wife and an Episcopalian priest undertook a dangerous “rescue mission” designed to extricate a teenager from the exploitive position he’d been in for almost a decade, Eichenwald had no way of knowing his good deed would lead to his reputation, career and life being ruined by an alliance of pedophiles and leftists who saw Eichenwald’s “conservative” attack on sexual sadism a betrayal of their movement.

With an undertone of finger wagging disapproval New York Magazine details the meltdown of Eichenwald’s career in an article that seems to suggest being a “good journalist” is more important a good person. In reading through the piece you see that author David France, while almost sympathetic at times, severely disapproves of Eichenwald’s desire to help the boy he saw as a victim. France believes, seemingly, that it is a hero complex that has ultimately led to Eichenwald’s demise:

As much as the stories provided a window into a seldom-seen world, they also raised troubling questions about how they were reported—and ultimately about the man who reported them. To start with, Eichenwald made himself a character in the story about Berry—highly unusual for the New York Times. The reporter appeared as a savior, working to win Berry’s trust and finally rescuing him from the business he’d fallen into and delivering him back to his religious faith. But once Eichenwald became part of the story, others began to ask questions: Why would a Times reporter believe he should go into the rescuing business? And how had he accomplished what he’d accomplished? (Reporting on child pornography is inherently difficult, because looking at the images themselves is illegal, even for a journalist.) And behind those questions is a more fundamental one: What drives the people who fill these roles, criminal and pursuer, obsessive fan and obsessive foe?

With the country’s vexed relationship to youthful sexuality as the backdrop, Eichenwald’s stories, hectoring as they were about the evils they were uncovering, had a kind of prurient power that is undeniably related to the power of pornography. The cure and the disease are impossible to separate.

Now Eichenwald has been ensnared by his own campaign. His reporting methods are under intense scrutiny, and he’s been pilloried by other journalists, by pro-sex activists, and by people whom his investigations helped to put in jail.

As the controversy has grown, Eichenwald has bunkered himself in his Dallas home. He has family members answer his doorbell. As our talk began, he closed the doors of his home office, which is tightly shuttered against a beautiful morning, though there is no one in the house but the two of us and the family’s three-legged dog, Maggie.

The fight he’s found himself in has wreaked havoc on his life. He’s teary, volatile, largely unable to work. He left the Times, then walked away from a large contract at Portfolio. His career is in tatters. For this, he blames a campaign by the convicts he’s exposed, other child molesters he doesn’t even know, random anonymous bloggers, and journalists, specifically the advocacy journalist Debbie Nathan, who has written several long pieces questioning his reporting methods and whom he calls “the high priestess of pedophilia.” He believes they are acting in concert to destroy him, professionally and emotionally.

France’s raised eyebrows at Eichenwald and his advocacy for exploited teens is starkly juxtaposed to the passing and uncritical treatment Debbie Nathan receives when she’s shows up on page 5 of the article:

Deeper issues surfaced almost immediately. The journalist Debbie Nathan (who has written for New York Magazine) became interested in Eichenwald’s Internet-sex pieces while doing research about child-pornography laws, which she believes should be amended to allow journalists and other researchers to verify the government’s impression of them. She thought that Eichenwald, whose stories seemed to imply he’d viewed lots of illegal sites, was given some sort of free pass by the Feds in part because he seemed so personally invested in promoting prosecution. Yet in an e-mail exchange, he denied viewing the sites, except by accident, which he said made it legal under certain circumstances.

Her Salon article was strident and prosecutorial, steeped in incredulity about Eichenwald’s methods. “Really? He didn’t know? Wasn’t hunting? Please!”

Eichenwald and the Times deny that Eichenwald did anything illegal in reporting the story. After the Nathan article, Eichenwald says he feared he might be arrested, or his children removed from his home based on her declaration that he illegally viewed underage porn. He instructed his personal lawyer to sue her for $10 million and publicly declared, “My wife and I have instructed our financial adviser to set aside $100,000 to finance the initial portions of this lawsuit.” So far he hasn’t sued, but in a private, seething e-mail to her, he wrote, “People like you are the maggots of journalism.” He later wrote a rambling, 2,600-word letter to Romenesko, the media blog, putting all other journalists on notice. “If you choose to rely on this conflicted woman for your reports, you do so at your own legal peril.”

Nathan has continued to battle Eichenwald with a fervor that mirrors his, writing about him for Counterpunch, and also in a short piece for this magazine’s Website. Nathan’s pro bono lawyer, the former New York corporation counsel Victor Kovner, says the whole affair left him stunned. “He flipped,” says Kovner. “It was ridiculous. But it turns out there are problems of which she was totally unaware, some of which have come to light.”

Nathan is treated in the article as if she’s a “real” journalist, though she clearly advocates a stance on children’s sexuality, and pornographic record keeping practices, that appeals mainly to pedophiles.

She also doesn’t believe that there are sex slaves in the U.S., perhaps taking the stand that the hundreds of Chinese, Latin American and Russian women who are sequestered in warehouses in and around NYC spend hours a day having sex with random men as a sex positive feminist statement.

So who is Debbie Nathan? She’s an award winning author who takes credit for single handedly debunking the Satanic Panic of the 80s and 90s while rarely if ever admitting that it was Fundamentalist Christian Magazine Cornerstone which first began casting doubt on Satanic Ritual Abuse and it’s most famous proponent within the Christian community that had embraced it. Her crusade against false reporting has transformed into advocacy of the worst kind as she attacks America’s “puritanical attitudes” toward children and sex. Debbie Nathan is a hold over from another age, a “feminist” who crusades against what is considered the excesses of feminism in the arena of sex.

It was at one time a popular stance that made women popular with both men and young women turned off by the anti-sex neo-Victorianism of the feminist establishment. Think of her as a pre-Internet Amanda Marcotte.

She also has been spearheading an effort to force the government to allow “journalists” and other researchers to purchase and view child pornography. This undoubtedly has many proponents who know that modern media has given almost anyone the ability to claim journalist status.

Eichenwald’s assumption that Nathan would be in league with pedophiles seeking to tarnish his reputation seems less paranoid when reading her writings which imply that pedophiles aren’t sexual sadists aroused by their ability to dominate children and cause them pain, but part of life’s “sexual diversity” which should be studied.

She is also, if we were to be objective, a victim of a “hero complex” as her tireless crusade to “liberate” children’s sexuality seems obsessive to say the least. But it is Eichenwald who is painted by the media as obsessive and France’s article is no different. In the acrimony and hostility aimed at Eichenwald, the criminality of the Justin Berry case is often underplayed:

Another of the cases the Berry story spurred involves Tim “Casey” Richards, a 23-year-old Internet-porn star who faces 220 years in prison when he goes for sentencing in December. Berry hired him to help run JustinsFriends in return for a share of the profits. “The first thing he asked me to do was upload a preview video,” says Richards over the phone from a Tennessee jail—the video featuring Berry and Taylor side by side. Richards says he was specifically told Taylor was an adult. A bio for Taylor also stated he was “18, almost 19.”

Richards was convicted on eleven counts of child pornography, both involving his role in distributing the Taylor video and videos he had made of an ex-boyfriend when the boyfriend was underage. “There was more hysteria surrounding Tim’s case than any other federal case I’ve ever handled,” says Peter Strianse, an attorney for Richards. “I don’t know if the government was being driven by that article in the New York Times, but it’s as if they felt they had to do something and make representations to the court that Tim was one of the largest purveyors of child pornography that they have ever encountered.”

“Casey” is the object of much sympathy but even in this sympathetic portrayal of him, we find a person who at 24 took pictures of himself performing sexually with his “underaged boyfriend.” Since the age of consent in most states is 16, we can reasonable assume that Casey’s supposed boyfriend was somewhere between 15 and 17. Why are we supposed to feel sorry for a 24 year old man who is molesting a 15 year old on film, then selling it, when he goes to jail?

Or the rest of the sorry crew of child pornographers for that matter? Maybe we should ask Gawker, Counterpunch, F.A.I.R., and all the other outfits “troubled” by Kurt Eichenwald’s tragic tale.

Read the entire article. I don’t know Kurt Eichenwald and why he was driven to help this kid. The snarky insinuations are that he was a pedophile feeling guilty. Maybe. Or maybe he was molested.

Or maybe he’s just a good guy who tried to do the right thing.

But even if the Debbie Nathan’s of the world are right about him how does it change the case? These people purchased, traded and produce child pornography. Is that now a right/left issue? Are we who want child pornographers arrested all “wingnuts’ now? Is it really so strange to want to help a person in a bad situation?

Haven’t you ever helped someone? Wouldn’t French or Nathan or even Amanda Marcotte extend themselves to others who really need it? Don’t we all have a responsibility to protect those who can’t protect themselves? And I don’t mean we as in the government, I mean you and me.

Debbie Nathan would say no I suppose, but luckily Kurt Eichenwald felt different. Now he’s paying the price for doing what’s right.

Sy Hersh Says “Jewish Money” Buys Off Democratic Presidential Candidates

While on the loathsome Democracy Now! dispensing the usual Stalinist agi-prop, the kind he’s been peddling for some time now, Hersh told the host that “Lots of Jewish money from New York” was responsible for the “hawkish” positions on Iran of the top Democrats.

I guess he’s in agreement with Wesley Clark.

Unsurprisingly it’s White Supremacist websites passing this clip around. I saw it on the site of vegan pantywaist/neo-Nazi The Hudson Valley Freeman. Here’s a picture of him. He looks exactly how you’d expect right?

The Nazi uses the Liveleak version which has just the money quote. The clip is from Hersh’s appearance on Oct 2nd. YouTube has the whole show broken into three parts. Parts One and two are worth your time if you’ve never seen the mind of committed anti-American leftists at work. Part three is Hersh’s Jewish money quote. It begins around 5:54

Aside from the quote in question, Hersh’s view of America and Israel is … nuanced to say the least. It’s almost as if his career is based on feeding hippies lies based on their petty bigotries and immature world view…

Pandagon Calls Bi-Racial Man a “Race Traitor” for Disagreeing with White Liberals

As I’ve said before, the white robes that hide under their cloak of self-righteous liberalism are always a comment thread away from being donned for a good old fashioned Internet lynching.

Just ask Francis Holland.

So last night I commented, in my usual temperate and erudite fashion, on this extra offensive Amanda Marcotte abortion which is just a rehash of the old “I’m a good white person, Republicans are the bad White people” cretinism that is de rigeur in liberal thought these days. It’s apparently about how offensive it is for rich White Liberals to be exposed as rich.

As I suspected my comment was followed with a flurry of racism, paranoia and ad hominem attacks.

The “high point” Pandagon’s own Mike Ess who after telling me that half of me hates the other half for being a Republican (but he’s not a racist) threw up this little glimpse into the mind of a modern liberal:

mikeess-racist-hack.jpg

That’s right, every Black man who disagrees with the White liberal establishment is a “race traitor” … to the White race which is all MikeEss cares about. Liberalism is an ideology that is based on the idea of group supremacy. It is the literal incarnation of the “tyranny of the masses” that a Republic must guard against. In the majority rules vision of politics of the liberal, Whites are the de facto leaders because of their sheer numbers.

Blacks are outnumbered by Whites and White and non-White Hispanics. With out safe guards to protect our freedoms anyone of African decent can be voted into poverty, servitude or worse. This is a chance White liberals are willing to take, with inevitable results.

The Pandagon comment thread is a microcosm of the liberal vision of America. Hateful, bigoted and a place where Blacks and any minority has to toe the line drawn by Whites or be attacked as a “race traitor.” A “race traitor” for thinking for myself. I’m a “race traitor” for not agreeing with Amanda Marcotte and the rest of the White liberals at Pandagon.

If it sounds familiar it’s because it is. The whole “race traitor” concept is borrowed from White Supremacists and recycled by the left to attack Black conservatives. That the left has no problem using neo-Nazi propaganda in slightly altered form is due largely to the love of totalitarianism inherent in both. That’s why they have no problem posting Nazi videos on DailyKos or why the White Aryan Resistance is in bed with the “peace” movement.

Read through all the comments, like I said it’s an orgy of left wing hate. The worse part though is that someone criticized Red Alerts design scheme as if Pandagon is eye achingly beautiful. That’s the most offensive part.

DailyKos Hates Women! (Blacks and Jews Enjoy Short Reprieve!)

Specifically, the White bigots at the racist hack run DailyKos hate this woman:

rachelmarsdenminiskirt.jpg

Yes, Rachel Marsden has run afoul of the brown shirts at DailyKampf who started a campaign to get her fired from her job at The Toronto Sun for the outrageous crime of offending a bi-polar anti-American drama queen she never met before.

He, along with some others, disagreed with an opinion piece she wrote defending water boarding which concluded with the some thought provoking humor which I found quite witty:

When asked about it during a recent CNN appearance, I suggested that “one man’s torture is another’s CIA-sponsored swim lesson.” In case anyone thought I was being facetious — I wasn’t.

I suppose that those who object to terror suspects getting water up the nose would say that, as a young competitive swimmer, I was also tortured. It was called “hypoxic training” — swimming underwater and holding our breath until we passed out. Our coaches didn’t call it torture, just an exercise in “mental toughness.” So think of it this way — terror suspects are getting some free mental toughness training courtesy of the U.S. government.

Here’s another idea to make the concept more palatable to objectors: Call the place where waterboarding is performed “The CIA Centre For Aquatic Excellence,” give all participants an “I survived training camp” T-shirt with the centre’s logo on it, and treat them to a couple of carbo-loading pancake breakfasts. It worked for us.

She’s right. When I was a kid getting forced under water in a pool until you almost drowned by the school bully was considered horseplay. Yet the basement dwelling ne’er-do-wells of DailyKos think it’s atrocious torture to have water poured on your face through a washcloth, an activity which sounds suspiciously like the skin treatments at some upscale spas.

Rather than argue the point with her like rational people, they reacted like the coven of miscreants they are, and stopped worshiping at the altar of Nazism and calling Black men monkeys just long enough to hatch a plot wherein the mostly American Kossacks would call the Sun’s editor and complain, making it look like Marsden caused an outrage among the readership.

And to the Sun’s shame it worked. Now Marsden it out of a job and the “reality based” community, full of “tolerant” people, are celebrating. The mostly White men at DailyKos are laughing about getting a strong willed, smart and opinionated woman fired from her job.

Where’s Amanda Marcotte?

She doesn’t dare speak out on this because she knows the same, or worse, would happen to her. That’s why people like her are always happy to play toady to a man who runs a site so anti-Semitic that Jewish members leave in anger. That’s why Marcotte and other lefty “feminists” will never speak out about the underhanded, misogynist treatment of this woman by men whose animosity was born as soon as they saw a picture like the one above (Marsden was at one time an aspiring model) and realized that not only was she “out of their league,” but that as her writing proves, she was beyond them intellectually.

This was the most craven and overt kind of misogyny. This was the hatred of a woman for being attractive, thoughtful, conservative and competent. All things Kossacks despise in women. They like their women eagerly nodding their heads in agreement to whatever political slogan they’ve copied down from a bumper sticker, only speaking when shrilly lecturing Republicans on how evil they are. Or advocating for the release of violent Marxists who belong in prison. Or cheering on the suicide of one of their supposed friends.

So maybe Blacks and Jews will get a bit of a reprieve from the bombardment of racism that is DailyKos while they dwell in in their misogyny for a few days. And the real life consequences of this sinister plot by these men, one admittedly unstable, who decided to “get that bitch” as they so crudely put it, will never be discussed. These men gang raped Rachel Mardsen’s career for the fun of it, and are celebrating what they suppose is that career’s untimely death.

But I suspect Mardsen won’t die so easily. Show your support by swinging by her site and be sure to visit her blog Rachel Marsden’s Daily Drive-By. If you feel like supporting her and sticking it to the Kossacks, check this out.

Saudi Court Sentences Gang Rape Victim to 200 Lashes: Pandagon Silent

Covering the outrageous treatment of women in Muslim countries wouldn’t fit in with their belief that they’re the heroic front line in an epic battle of rich White women from America’s suburbs fighting the ultimate evil of Emperor Bush and his Christianist abortion doctor murder corps. If Pandagon’s readers knew about the real oppression of women in Muslim countries, Amanda Marcotte accusing other Whites of being racists while shilling for a party that has never tossed out seditious Klan recruiter Robert Byrd would look extra silly.

Like all White liberals, the gals at Pandagon are loath to give up their pseudo-victimhood, which is the core of their identity, so like the Muslim apologists in the MSM they bury stories like this which would draw attention away from the plight of the rich White harpy and make Americans realize how backward and barbaric the rest of the world really is:

JEDDAH, 15 November 2007 — The General Court in Qatif yesterday doubled the number of lashes for a rape victim as well as jail terms for her assaulters. In its verdict, the court also suspended the victim’s lawyer from defending her.

The case was referred back to the General Court by the Appeals Court judges last summer after Abdul Rahman Al-Lahem, the victim’s lawyer, successfully contested against the initial verdict saying it too lenient for the rapists and unjust for the victim.

A year-and-a-half ago in the Eastern Province town of Qatif, a seven men gang-raped a 19-year-old girl 14 times. Three judges from the Qatif General Court sentenced the rape victim to 90 lashes for being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape. The sentences for the seven rapists ranged from 10 months to five years in prison.

The Appeals Court sentenced the victim to 200 lashes and six months in prison. The seven rapists had their sentences increased to between two and nine years. The verdict came in as a shock to everybody.

A source at the Qatif General Court said that the judges had informed the rape victim that the reason behind doubling her punishment was “her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media.”

Judge Soliman Al-Muhanna from the Qatif court told the lawyer (Al-Lahem) that the judicial committee had decided to suspend him from the case. They also confiscated his license which is granted to Saudi lawyers by the Ministry of Justice.

“I explained to them that it was my job to do everything legal in order to serve my client. But they did not listen,” he said.

To Al-Lahem’s surprise he received a call from the Judicial Investigation Department of the Ministry of Justice to inform him of a disciplinary session he should attend on 25th of the Hijra month.

“Actually this is the second time they have contacted me. They claim that I advertise my services and that that is against Saudi law,” he said.

Did you get all that, Amanda? A woman was out on a date, got gang raped and was then sentenced to being beaten with a whip until her blood flows like a river and the flesh hangs from her back in strips. It’s possible that a person may not even be able to survive 200 lashes. Are you outraged?

Does the fact that she was originally sentenced to 90 lashes then got more for speaking out to the media make you rethink the “we live in a police state” nonsense that drives so much of the left? We all believe that a fundamental right all people are endowed with is free speech, right? Now hers, along with all women in Saudi Arabia are being taken from them by this punishment.

Will you remember this the next time you’re cheering on Keith Olberman’s (very) special comment on how we live in a dictatorship?

Of course not. Amanda Marcotte and those of her ilk don’t care about this poor woman, that’s why it’s up to noted feminists like Allahpundit to publicize this case. Marcotte (and I only use her as an example, feel free to insert the name of your favorite White liberal “feminist” with a chip on her shoulder) isn’t interested in some Arab woman’s plight, mainly because it would mean she would be agreeing with people who think differently than her, but also because she doesn’t believe Arab women have the same rights as you and I.

The reason for this is twofold. The first is pure racism, or in the case of the modern left “orientalism” which those of you who like me studied Comparative Religion in college know is racist view of Eastern (in this case Islamic) “otherness” as a sort of noble savagery superior to our decadent western ways.

Through the orientalist lens, the oppression of women is either ignored or excused with a tired, “but it’s their culture!” To the Marcottes of the world, the idea of this woman being whipped half to death by a real misogynist government that oppresses women is no more shocking or important than the fact that English strippers don’t shave their pits.

The second reason is the liberals’ fundamental misunderstanding of the freedoms the Founding Fathers thought were so important that they created a Republic where the rule of law would protect individuals from the tyranny of the masses. Liberals believe that these rights were simply made up by these men and the Constitution grants them to us. I, along with many on the right and the Founding Fathers themselves, believe that the rights are the birth right of every single person on this planet and the Constitution protects Americans from having their natural rights taken away from them.

Marcotte doesn’t think this victim has the same rights as her, and worse, that we Americans wanting to help her retain her rights and dignity are wrong. To them it is imperialism for me to say that we should demand the commutation of this barbaric sentence and work for the liberation of women in Islamic countries. Just like it was “imperialism” for Republicans to crush the slave states in the civil war.

Ironically, it’s their belief that Americans should enjoy rights and freedoms the rest of the world is denied which is imperialism. It is America funding the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia by buying their oil, when there’s plenty off the coast of Florida, that is imperialism.

And it is the supposed feminist movement turning a blind eye to real oppression that is the hight of imperial hubris.
